Gigs' Reviews : Pamplemousse + Symphohm - February 2020

PAMPLEMOUSSE + SYMPTOHM - 08th February 2020 - STUDIOTIC, Saint Denis.

This worthy long break is obviously over as all the markers have turned back to a dirty green color : the inescapable social life is on its way back, noisy bustles and daily routines are recovering, human mediocrity beautifully spoils again everything everywhere and the consequently nausea and boredom seem to be back on spot.
Hey man ! Stop with all your dumb, dead-end complains ! Ok... So, here come a few positive news to focus on : new batches of records have at least arrived from the mainland with the re-opening of air-mail, local rock'n'roll bands are finally playing new songs in the usual cool bars and the desire for some useless reviews on all that is back too ! Good enough ?
Four months behind schedule has ever remained quite a good average at Shut Up & Play the Music, so a little look back on that early February StudioTic’s x show, featuring the local band Pamplemousse x - the French word for grapefruit -, is a good start for some new reviews and an adequate shot of citrus’ vitamins to face those unordinary times.

Pamplemousse’s early days is a story of a dizzying ascent. The trio seemed to have surged from nowhere on Reunion Island three years ago. They nicely shook the local punk scene with a few local wild gigs, a strongly DIY attitude and a powerful sound, and gained a very fast national notoriety with a first self-titled LP, released by A Tant Rêver Du Roi Records x - an active French label located in Pau and mostly committed with noise and post-rock bands (but also into weirdos, drones, math rock or shoegaze sounds). By then, they quickly opened gigs and festivals for many sizable bands (LANE, Unsane, the Liminanas, the Make-Overs...). The 2nd Lp, the appropriately named High Strung, released last year on the same label, finalized the settings of Pamplemousse’s sound, and 2020 was going to be the blowing year for the band. Damned sanitary crisis ! Next year for sure, guys !

During that February night, the show took place at the StudioTic and had a tasty flavor of the 90’s underground sound.
Straight away from the work to the stylish blockhaus/cave, and just in time to catch the last songs of the opening band, SymptOhm... This new band had, despite the heavy metal guitar sound, a nice Dischords-like emo-core side. They opened for the 2020 Rock à La Buse festival at the Palaxa lately in March. A band to check better next time.
Pamplemousse performed then a powerful show and played once again an amazing mixture of post-hardcore and noise, with a little touch of modern stoner rock : pervasive walls of sound, noisy distorsions and efficient riffs on the guitar, fast tempo and loud muffled bass, tense screaming-to-the-guts voice of the singer, which nervous-looking attitude deeply contrasted with the cooler one of the drummer and the always-smiling face of the female bassist.

Whether it be in the sound or in the furious DIY independence, the lineage clearly seemed to come from the French version of Sub Pop and Dischords : all those mid 90’s bands from Western France (les Thugs, Hint, Portobello Bones, Seven Hate or, further south, the noisy family of Vicious Circle Records). It wasn’t a huge surprise then, when the band decided to record its two albums at the famous Black Box Studios in Noyant-la Gravoyère, near Angers (Check that list of all the bands which recorded there x !!). A nice little taste of my sweety youth in the Anjou softness, indeed, and thus, a link to many good memories.

PAMPLEMOUSSE + SYMPTOHM - 08/02/2020 - STUDIOTIC, Saint Denis.
