Turning Round On The Turntable : La Découpe, Food Fight, Mini Skirt/C.O.F.F.I.N., Set-Top Box, Men & Health

LA DECOUPE - Inadapté Ep - WANDA Rec,  BELUGA Rec, GHOST HIGHWAY Rec, ADREANLIN FIX MUSIC, PIGME Rec - 2021 X

La Découpe

Garage punk is like the Phoenix, it’s always ready to be reborn from its ashes. It has ever been the same old story for almost 60 years, but each time, it was such a delight ! A bunch of young, broke losers in their mid-twenties, decide to start a local garage punk band to face boredom and an off-putting musical offer, organize some vivid gigs for their alter-egos and build strong DIY connections, release some records on small labels, and finally, a few killer' bands emerge, gain an international recognition and revive a breathless dynamic.
The story happened once again in the mid-tenies in the southern part of France : the meeting of the Beaten Brats from Lyon, Tomy & the Cougars from Marseille, the Silly Walks from Montpellier, the Ravelin's punkers in Toulouse, the Suzards from Bordeaux, etc... ended up with a new wave of killer bands that swept Europe in just a few months. Among the others: the Lullies (garage punk'n'roll), the Scaners (garage/synth punk), the Grys-Grys (psyche/garage - check their damned good last album, just out on Norton Records)... That was just before the pandemia.
La Découpe, coming straight from that background, is the new punk rock project of some of those guys. For the co-release of this first Ep, the band re-activated its labels' network in Germany (Wanda Rec. x), Spain (Ghost Highway Rec. x), Sweden (Beluga Rec. x) and France (Adrenalin Fix Music xPigmé Rec. x). The forthcoming (?) European tours should be hot and wild.
They perfectly know what the 77-punk French-touch means : Calcinator, Soda Fraise, Electrodes... and all the following bands digging that seam (La Flingue - by the way, the Gasolheads/Hatepinks' singer drew the cover -, Périphérique Est, Asphalt...) aren't really far. The nervous voice of the singer and the French lyrics, dealing with the daily loose and the decadence of an offset life, fully stick with the fast tempo and the wall of guitars. I ain't got no job, no love, no hope and no fear, says in a few French words the singer. Yeah, love, love, love for that kind of shit !

FOOD FIGHT - #1 Ep - SNAP !! Records - 2021 X

Food Fight

France again ! Something seems to happen nowadays in many provincial cities, many awesome bands into 77-punk, powerpop, garage punk and postpunk bands are popping up everywhere. A good news for sure ! Isn’t that a rebirth of the national punk scene ? The (no) future will tell us...
Foodfight is a four-pieces band from Rennes, Brittany, and they play a really stylish mix of mod revival (Merton Parkas, Long Tall Shorty, the Cigarettes...) and 79-powerpop (the Nerves, the Boys...), with a perfect British accent and some really classy, clean tunes. They aren't any novices of course, as some of them also play in the Ready-Mades (soul garage), Abuse (melodic Hxc) or the Headliners (melodic Oi), without forgetting 103 Pogo (I used to love that rock'n'Oi band in the early noughties !).
For the release of their first 4-songs Ep, they landed on Snap!! Records x, the Spanish label dedicated to international powerpop (the Speedways, the Reflectors, More Kicks...). A label that should open a few gates to them. We’ll follow that carefully !

Records, label espagnol dédié à la power-pop internationale (the Speedways, the Reflectors, More Kicks...).

MINI SKIRT / C.O.F.F.I.N - S/t Ep - Self Released - 2021 X

Mini Skirt / COFFIN

Check that front picture of the 7inch ! A six-pack, some dirty flip-flops and a bright sun - it looks like my daily life on Reunion Island ! - are for sure the best supports to deal with those two Aussie bands, featuring some greasy punkers playing with guts’n’balls !! But this doesn't prevent them from making a stand on political issues linked to the Aboriginal question, and paying respect to that people on the inner sleeve's notes.
Mini Skirt is a four-pieces band from Byron Bay, NSW.
Two years ago, the Untitled track, standing on the Born Bad 20th Anniversary compilation (Les Disques Mauvais Garçons) showed us a band that could easily handle with the sound of Cosmic Psychos as well as the one of Eddy Current Suppression Ring. A big, loud sound with a really pleasant Aussie postpunk side !
After a first album (the self-released Casino Lp, lately re-released in Europe by Erste Theke Tonträger), the tendency seems to prevail on these two new songs : the skinned-alive voice, coming straight from the guts of the screamo-singer sounds more aggressive, and the powerful wall of guitars, sharper on the fast-tempo song DIY Nightmare, remains highly emotional, with continuous high-tones notes, on the mid-tempo tune Bag Of Bones.
Mini Skirt earns a good place alongside the latest Last Quokka, Jackson Reid Briggs & the Heaters and Stiff Richards' records.

Talking about the crews embedded on Legless Records' ship… The four guys in C.O.F.F.I.N. are closely linked to the Melbourne label, as it released the second Lp of the band last year.
The sound ? C.O.F.F.I.N. - Children Of Finland Fighting In Norway, the name says it all, even if they're from Sydney ! - makes us travel in a world of highly punchy hard rock, trashy punk and sweaty pits. Think Black Sabbah, Motörhead... with a singer barking his lyrics. Special mention to the awesome song City Sun.
And don't forget to check back the surprising Buzzcocks-like guitar riff (it sounds like a fast version of  Harmony In My Head !) on their terrific song Be Gone, put out in 2019 on Bargain Bin Records, the Chats’ label. The Australian punk scene seems to be a small world in a giant country. How the hell do they manage to have so many amazing bands ?

SET-TOP BOX - Max Headroom Ep - POLACKS Rec. WEATHER VANE Rec. - 2021 X

Set-Top Box

There's another guy in Sydney who took advantage in the past lockdowns to record lots of lo-fi tunes ! The relentless and prolific Tee-Vee Repairmann (Gee Tee, Satanic Togas, RRC...) is back with his minimalist disco/synth-punk solo project, Set-Top Box. He already recorded, in just a few years, a few demo tapes, a split EP with RMFC on Goodbye Boozy Rec., and a first LP, released by Erste Theke Tonträger - the German label being once again in all the good plans.
His Max Headroom's Ep features four highly danceable songs with drum machine, weirdos computer games' sounds, synthesizers, smart guitar parts, and a distinctive lo-fi voice. It was co-released by the French label Polaks Records x (involved in the French editions of Vintage Crop, Lymes, Hooper Crescent, Basic Shapes, the Floaties...) and Weather Vane Records x (another Geelong's label).

MEN & HEALTH - Heroin On Reality TV Ep - LEVANDE BEGRAVD Rec - 2021 X

Men & Health

Shitty music for shitty people ! The inner sleeve's quotation warn the listeners that the three Danish & Spanish guys (& girl) in Men & Health (two guitarists, a bassist and a drum machine for the rhythm) don't seem to take life too seriously. The minimalist lyrics are spit in continuous loops and those damned stupid slogans remain in the head the whole day, thanks !
Five songs are laying on the vinyl. Right On! and Freezing Cold have that foolish, lo-fi post-punk sound that the Minneapolis Uranium Club and Vintage Crop used to have in their early years. Heroin On Reality TV and Planet Made Of You are two brilliant, jumpy, quirky garage punk songs - something close to the French Pierre & Bastien. The last ballad, Getting Up At Noon, left me quite puzzled.
The record was released by the Swedish label Levande Begravd x in Gothenburg (by the way, the band Kristen Resning also seems amazing!). Thanks to Tremendo Garaje x and his YouTube channel for the discovery of Men & Health. Digging further down to find some new nuggets is a never-ending, but so fascinating quest, that gives a real sense to life.

Shitty music for shitty people !
La dernière ballade, Getting Up At Noon, m'a par contre laissé perplexe.
