Turning Round On The Turntable : Tee Vee Repairmann, Alvilda, V/A Spasmes du Hasard, Vintage Crop

TEE VEE REPAIRMANN - Patterns Ep - URGE RECORDS/ WARTTMANN INC. - 2021 X

Tee Vee Repairmann

What's the common thread between Gee Tee, Satanic Togas, Set-Top Box and Research Reactor Corporation ? The four Aussie bands, part of the vibrant synth/garage-punk scene of Sydney, share the same member, Ishka Meades, whose solo side-project and stage names are better known as Tee Vee Repaimann.
After the already promising song New Promotion, a Hubble Bubble's cover that featured on the compulsory GTRRC II compilation (Legless Rec., 2020), Tee Vee Repairmann scored the try with this 4-songs Patterns' EP : hyper classy garage-punk tunes (Bad Tastes, Lights Out), amazing synth/power-pop songs (Patterns, Dirty Hands), adequate lo-fi touch in the sound and vocals, catchy melodies and jovial voice, standing as many invitations for fun, sing-along and dancing. Isn't that a straight call for good spirit and excitement, the same way Nobunny or Shannon & the Clams used to do in the early tenies ?
The record was self-released by Warttmann Inc. x, his tapes' label which stepped forwards with this very first vinyl release - it sounds like a great news ! - and co-released with the US/Aussie label Urge Rec. x. A blast !

ALVILDA - Négatif Ep - ALIEN SNATCH RECORDS - 2021 X

Alvilda

Alvilda Vs Pogy et les Kéfars ! The Paris-Marseille kick-ass match - a pure aural bliss - managed to keep me awake during the Reunion torpor of the Austral winter, and for the lucky ones living on the mainland, their final face-to-face show in Bordeaux in October should end up in a perfect draw. Two brilliant French power-pop bands with French smart lyrics, melodic vocals and jovial choirs, highly danceable riffs, and on the top of that, an attendance and a youth full-filled with authenticity and sincerity ! We already talked a bit around here about the Southern France band, but who's Alvilda ?
Alvilda ? A Viking princess, who fled away an arranged marriage and led a pirate sisterhood for the love of freedom ! The name of the band seems to stand as a strong warning to fight some misleading appearances, because below the contagious freshness and the sweety sound of the band - the comparison with the very best songs of the 80's froggy girly band les Calamités (New Rose Rec., 1984) is just staggering - the four girls aren't any pretentious braggarts : rude girls looking, sharpies' haircuts and tattoos, working-class-zero * topics in the lyrics ( all the lyrics are included with the record and deal with broke days and daily loose, heartaches – special mention to the Cinema song – or the pride for their ways of life), and a huge involvement in the rebirth of the Parisian Oi scene (Squelette, Bromure, BSC gigs' organisation..). A classy, independent attitude with a highly rock'n'roll, feminine touch ! Wooh !!
The 4-songs Ep was released by Alien Snatch Records x, the German fav' label dedicated to international garage punk and power-pop for more than twenty years (by the way, Alvilda has been the first French band signed by the label since the Protokids' Geometric Boy Ep in 2013). A Guarantee of quality ! Good job !

Bravo !

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Spasmes Du Hasard Lp - SDZ RECORDS - 2021 X

VA Spasmes du Hasard

Talking about freshness, cheerfulness and youth... It used to happen to me a long, lost time ago, when I was fully living the last civilizational adventure of our modern world, when the only thing I really knew was that the future was coming tomorrow *. The Born Bad shop, which had just settled down in Paris, was becoming my main dealer, and an unlimited universe of rock music was opening its gate in front of me.
I probably tried there that little fanzine called SDZ - the three guys in Steve & the Jerks were writing some reviews for it... The fanzine quickly became a label with some terrific bands (Anteenagers MC, les Dérailleurs, les Vipères, Cheveu...) and the shows, organized by the boss Nico SDZ, were just mesmerizing.
No matter what we do - getting involved in familial plans or busy with musical projects, cultivating one's own boredom, trying to seize the day or getting overwhelmed by that damned crawling, petty-bourgeois depression - we helplessly witness that everything inexorably fast forwards. With this story too, time seemed to have flied all of a sudden. The Lp compilation, Flottante Tension d'Eclipse, was already celebrating the 10th anniversary of the label, but SDZ Records x was still involved in many projects : Etrange Ressac's blog, Crudités Radio shows, Crudités Tapes sub-label (check again that awesome Armure's demo-tape, featuring the genius in Space Padlocks - the obvious link toward the band Marie Mathématique from Toulouse (next musical crush of the label ?))... And once again, many amazing records, always released with a leading passion and a strong exigency.
Some of them have become essential : Musique Grecque, of course, a must-have of the last decade, recorded by the so punk guys in Pierre & Bastien. But also, the really Velvet-ian first album of Le Villejuif Underground, with Nathan Roche as a frontman , Some Beautiful Species Left, performed by the post-punk/dub/progressive rock Aussie band EXEK, or the last release of the label, Malcantone, a Lp full-filled with catchy rock'n'roll ballads and jumpy garage punk songs by the Italo-Swiss band Leopardo.
Some others seemed to be the result of pleasant acquaintances : the Quebecker Vince Fatals, the 100-bands' guy, coming back with his new garage/psyche project Vince & His Lost Delegation, or the County Teasers' singer with his new band the Rebel. For the last ones, those with a pointed, experimental, sometimes complex or weirdos approach (Rose Mercie, Ricardo Dias Gomes, Elg), well, weeds might help to get the thing...
SDZ Records gathered here some multi-faced new materials, or unreleased stuff, of those ten bands, to celebrate the 21st birthday (why not?) of the label. The compilation Lp Spasmes Du Hasard - such a suggestive name, the meeting of the convulsions of life and some pure chance encounters - looks like a progress report of SDZ action over the last decade. So, let's go for another 10 years and see you for the 32nd anniversary ? Tomorrow, indeed.

Ahh !
Demain, finalement...

VINTAGE CROP - Serve To Serve Again Lp - UPSET ! THE RHYTHM/ ANTI-FADE RECORDS - 2021 X

Vintage Crop

Did you check that damned good video-clip of the song The North, a hit featuring on the Vintage Crop's new album ? A revelation !
It took quite a long time to me to get into that band yet, my very first try with them was their Company Man 7inch (Anti-Fade/ Drunken Sailor Rec., 2019), which undoubtedly suffered from the comparison with the Minneapolis Uranium Club Band, the American top leader of the Devo-id post-punk revival by then. But fortunately, it's never too late to get the thing fixed, even behind schedule...
A more attentive listening of the B-side song Stock Options, or a further curiosity for the Vintage Crop's first two albums, TV Organs (Polacks Rec., 2018), and New Age (Anti-fade Rec., 2019), would have probably pointed earlier the full range of the Aussie band, which could already wander, with such an ease, into some raw garage-punk sound, launch a few 2/3-Minutes-Radio-Friendly folky power-pop anthems or play some really efficient, cold post-punk songs.
The Vintage Crop's third Lp brightly gathers that whole sound, while the ingenious melodies on the solo guitar seem to be caught in a non-stop conversation with the nervous vocals of the singer. Last but not least, the 12 songs are served (to serve again) by really clever lyrics (included), mostly questioning the hassle of social relations and the absurdity of the daily life, but without falling into some easy-going proselytism (special mention for Life & Times and the North !).
Serve To Serve Again was put out last year on Anti-Fade Records x, and Upset ! The Rhythm x, the London-based label deeply involved into the Aussie post-punk scene for a few years (Terry, Constant Mogrel, Primo!...), offered, with this European version, a second chance to the few laggards of my kind.
