We must admit it. It was pretty fun to play the smart punk professor in the columns of the Reunionese webzine Bongou throughout the whole austral winter (have a check on the series Allez Les Filles, a 12-episode report on the punk girls in our local gigs x), but this time-consuming story has sadly led us to make a complete pause from the Turning Round The Turntable section of Shut Up & Play the Music. The heart of the blog, indeed... But hopfully, we're back and fully ready for a few reviews of the records that have turned round the turntable over the last five months. So, let's start with the latest batch of 7-inch records that our favorite, passionate dealer of lo-fi garage-punk nuggets - Goodbye Boozy Records - put together in the middle of the Italian summer.
C'était bien beau de faire le malin dans les colonnes du webzine réunionnais Bongou pendant tout l'hiver austral (voir précédemment la série en 12 épisodes Allez Les Filles, témoignage local de concerts punk conjugués au féminin x), mais cette histoire, ô combien chronophage, nous a conduit à faire l'impasse totale sur la rubrique Turning Around The Turntable de Shut Up & Play the Music. Autant dire, le coeur du blog... Alors, on va se rattraper. Et parler des disques qui ont tourné sur la platine ces cinq derniers mois. On commence par la dernière livraison de 45 tours, préparée, au cœur de l'été italien, avec toujours autant de passion, par notre dealer favori de disques de garage-punk lo-fi : Goodbye Boozy Records.
LOTHARIO - Drunk Fuck/ Black Hair Sp - GOODBYE BOOZY Records - 2023 X
Hot, hot, hottie ! Winter may be still around in Australia, the temperature keeps on rising, and Lothario seems to have a lot to do with that...
A few years ago, we discovered the trashy, highly sexualised garage-punk world of the blonde Amy Taylor (Amyl and the Sniffers), coming straight from what was then becoming the rock'n'roll capital of the world : Melbourne. At the time, we thought we'd reached the heights of the genre. But in fact, we hadn't yet. Because nowadays, Annaliese Redlich, the brunette in the Adidas sportsuit and sexy underwear, turns to be the new muse of the DIY punk in Melbourne and seems ready to become the future icon of the best kind of feminists we all know - the ones with a serious touch of sex appeal.
With the first single of her band Lothario, she performs two lo-fi tracks with a brilliantly animal and sticky garage-punk sound. Black Hair and Drunk Fuck are highly enjoyable and addictive! The sound is primitive and the playing as minimalist as you could wish, in a very Ramones, Spits and Buck Biloxi vein. It's worth noting that American Robert Watson Craig III (Buck Biloxi & the Fucks, Giorgio Murderer, New Buck Biloxi x, PScience x, etc...) brings his characteristic nervous drumming to the band, and that a split-Ep Lothario/ New Buck Biloxi is about to be released on the American label Under The Gun Records to coincide with their joint US tour this autumn. You should also check Annaliese's 100% girl garage/synth-pop band Imperial Leather (Rack Off Records).
This 7-inch is a masterly slap in the face. And it's jaw-dropping.
Oh punaise ! C'est chaud là ! C'est peut-être encore l'hiver du côté de l'Australie mais la température continue de grimper, et Lothario semble y être pour beaucoup...
Il y a quelques années, on découvrait le garage-punk trashy et hautement sexualisé de la blonde Amy Taylor et de ses renifleurs (Amyl and the Sniffers), en direct de ce qui était en train de devenir la capitale mondiale du rock'n'roll : Melbourne. On pensait alors avoir atteint les sommets du genre. C'était sans compter sur Annaliese Redlich, la brunette en survet Adidas et sous-vêtements sexy, nouvelle égérie du punk DIY melbournois et future icône d'un féminisme non dénué de 'sex-appeal'...
Avec le premier simple de son groupe Lothario, elle balance deux titres lo-fi d'un garage-punk génialement animal et poisseux. Ce Black Hair et ce Drunk Fuck s'avèrent hautement jouissifs et addictifs ! Le son est primitif et le jeu minimaliste à souhait, sur une lignée très Ramones, Spits et Buck Biloxi. On notera d'ailleurs que l'américan Robert Watson Craig III (Buck Biloxi & the Fucks, Giorgio Murderer, New Buck Biloxi x, PScience x, etc...) apporte ici son jeu de batterie nerveux si caractéristique, et qu'un split-Ep Lothario/ New Buck Biloxi est sur le point de sortir sur Under The Gun Records à l'occasion de leur tournée commune aux USA cet automne. On s'empressera également de poser une oreille sur le groupe garage/synth-pop 100% féminin de Annaliese : Imperial Leather (Rack Off Records).

ABORTED TORTOISE / GHOULIES - Euro Tour Split-Ep - GOODBYE BOOZY Records - 2023 X
Hey guys ! There's an ocean between us, but in practice, we're also neighbours! So, at the other far end of the Indian Ocean, along the coast of Western Australia and in the middle of the bush, lies the city of Perth. As in any other major Australian cities, its garage-punk scene is thriving. And two more killer bands hang around through the town : Aborted Tortoise and Ghoulies.
We can finally write a few words on those two combos, whose records have regularly come across our ears but have never ended in one of our glowing reviews. Aborted Tortoise's hit Factory, for instance, was played on a loop after the release of the Scale Model Subsistence Vendor Ep by Goodbye Boozy Records back in 2020, but suffered from our procrastination following the violent outburst of the sanitary crisis. The second album by the same Aborted Tortoise (A Album, Bachelor Records, 2021), which digital version we were thrilled to listen to, unfortunately disappeared into the post-Covid limbo of a defective postal network after we had ordered it from the Austrian label. Not to mention the Ghoulies' Ep Reprogram x, which we talked about much too quickly in our review of the 2021-spring batch of Goodbye Boozy Records. We also came across the two bands through our reviews of Dennis Cometti's records x, as this combo shares a few members with them (incidentally, Dennis Cometti's second album, Suburban Condition, has just been released on Bargain Bin Records, the label linked to the Chats x).
So, anyway, here there are ! Aborted Tortoise is a nervous lo-fi garage-punk band, with a nice Australian touch in the guitar solos. The track Malpractice bears a striking resemblance to the Kidnappers and Hidden Charms - two major German garage-punk bands from the 2000s - while Smart Home has a very pleasant early-Living Eyes feel. Then, the game of the musical chairs leads to the Ghoulies : the rhythm guitarist goes off to drink his beer, a blondie girl takes over the synths, and the remaining guitarist starts singing. Ghoulies sounds like a synthetic, very dynamic and almost eggy garage-punk band - a la Lassie x, Ex-White x or Ero Guro - and, the voice strongly reminds us the one of Jay Reatard. The two bands toured Europe in September (and not so surprisingly, mostly in Germany).
To end up with this review linked to the Perth's garage-punk scene, let's also mention the demo-cassette by the local band Alf x, released on Goodbye Boozy Records at the same moment as this whole batch. The track Smooth It Over would be worthy of a single...
Les gars ! Un océan nous sépare, mais en pratique, on est presque voisins !
Donc, à l'autre bout de l'Océan Indien, sur la côt Ouest de l'état du Western Australia, gît cette ville pommée au milieu de son bush : Perth. Là aussi, comme dans toutes les grandes villes australiennes, la scène garage-punk y est foisonnante. Et deux véritables joyaux s'y cachent : Aborted Tortoise et Ghoulies.
On se penche enfin sur ces deux groupes dont on a pourtant régulièrement croisé les traces vinyliques. Ainsi, le tube Factory d'Aborted Tortoise, qui tourna en boucle lors de la sortie du Ep Scale Model Subsistence Vendor (Goodbye Boozy Records déjà, en 2020), et qui échappa de peu à une de nos chroniques dithyrambiques - oui, la sidération et la procrastination consécutives aux débuts violents de la crise sanitaire en décidèrent autrement. Ou encore, ce second album des mêmes Aborted Tortoise (A Album, Bachelor Records, 2021), dont l'écoute digitale nous emballa, mais qui, une fois commandé auprès du label autrichien, disparu malheureusement dans les limbes d'un réseau postal mondial post-Covidaire totalement défaillant. Sans parler du Ep Reprogram des Ghoulies x, trop rapidement abordé dans ces lignes lors de la chronique de la fournée printanière de Goodbye Boozy Records en 2021. On a enfin croisé ces deux groupes à travers nos chroniques des disques de Dennis Cometti x - ce combo partage un certain nombre de membres avec eux (d'ailleurs, le second album de Dennis Cometti, Suburban Condition, vient de sortir sur Bargain Bin Records, le label lié aux Chats x).
Bref, ils sont désormais là... Aborted Tortoise, c'est donc un groupe de garage-punk lo-fi et nerveux, avec la petite touche de folie australienne qui va bien dans les solos de guitare. Le morceau Malpractice ressemble assez à ce que faisait les Kidnappers et les Hidden Charms- deux des meilleurs combos garage-punk allemands des années 2000 - tandis que Smart Home possède ce petit côté early-Living Eyes très plaisant. Jeu des chaises musicales ensuite avec les Ghoulies : le guitare rythmique part boire sa bière, une blondinette se colle au synthé, le guitariste restant assure également le chant. Les Ghoulies ? Du garage-punk synthétique et minimaliste, 'eggy', à la Lassie x, Ex-White x ou Ero Guro, très dynamique et avec une voix qui ressemble fortement à celle de Jay Reatard. Les deux groupes étaient en tournée européenne en septembre (et chose peu étonnante, principalement en Allemagne).
Pour en finir avec Perth, signalons la démo du groupe local Alf x, sortie en cassette sur Goodbye Boozy Records au même moment que ce split Ep. Le titre Smooth It Over mériterait à lui tout seul un 45 tours...
SATANIC TOGAS - Digital World Ep - GOODBYE BOOZY Records - 2023 X
Australia, once again. The Aussie band Satanic Togas x is back with this awesome Digital World - Europe Tour 06/23 Ep. The fun crew keeps on serving up its resolutely budget-rock and garage-punk soundings that are both dirty and square (reminiscent the Mummies or the Rip-Offs), with a pinpoint drumming (Ben Portnoy from C.O.F.F.I.N. x), some insanely eggy guitar surges and the unmistakable screaming voice of Ishka Meades, the ultra-prolific guitarist/vocalist of Gee Tee x, Set-Top Box x, Tee Vee Repairman x, RRC and head of the Warttmann Inc. label. The four tracks are calibrated and the whole thing is packed in only six minutes. Please note that a second Lp is soon going to be put out on the Oregon label Total Punk Records. Satanic Togas are as devilishly effective as ever !
This 4-title Ep supported the trio's summer European tour with Gee Tee, which is also in the news - a second album, Goodnight Neanderthal, has just been co-produced by Goner Records and Urge Records, while their now classic debut LP is already on its fourth re-release on Goodbye Boozy Records (without forgetting the Live N Dangerous Lp that has just been re-released by Sweet Time Records). These two Sydney bands, Satanic Togas and Gee Tee have definitely become compulsory.
On reste en Australie où l'on retrouve avec grand plaisir les Satanic Togas x et leur excellent Digital World - Europe Tour 06/23.Ils continuent de nous servir ce garage-punk résolument 'budget rock' et fun, au son à la fois cradingue et carré (on pense aux Mummies ou aux Rip-Offs), au jeu de batterie millimétrée (Ben Portnoy desC.O.F.F.I.N. x est à la manœuvre), aux envolées de guitare follement 'eggy' et à la voix hurlée, sur le fil et reconnaissable entre toutes, d'Ishka Meades, l'ultra prolifique guitariste/chanteur des Gee Tee x, Set-Top Box x, Tee Vee Repairman x, RRCet patron du label Warttmann Inc.. Les quatre morceaux sont calibrés et l'ensemble est emballé-pesé en six minutes. Un second Lp est prévu prochainement sur le label de l'Oregon Total Punk Records. Les Satanic Togas restent toujours aussi diablement efficace !
Ce Ep 4-titres accompagnait la tournée européenne estivale du trio en compagnie des Gee Tee, dont l'actualité est également assez riche : un second album, Goodnight Neanderthal, est sorti en coproduction chez Goner Records et Urge Records, tandis que leur désormais classique premier Lp en est déjà à sa quatrième réédition chez Goodbye Boozy Records (sans oublier non plus le Lp Live N Dangerous ré-édité ces jours ci par Sweet Time Records). PAT AND THE PISSERS - Growth Ep - GOODBYE BOOZY Records - 2023 X
Pat and the Pissers will clearly please any fans of big, violent soundings a la Youth Of Today, DRI and early Beastie Boys: frantic NYHC tempo interspersed with decelerations flirting with rap-core, fat crossover riffs, metal option on the solos, all that being served up by a wickedly angry voice on a Washington DC hardcore mode... This 5-track Ep leaves us with a furious desire to headbang in the pit and stick a few well-placed slaps to the face of our overly restless neighbours!
With this Growth Ep, Goodbye Boozy Records breaks away from its usual lo-fi garage-punk credo and pushes us to discover the mid-west DIY punk scene. If you're curious enough, take a closer look at Pat & the Pissers' two demos (the nihilistic post-punk killer track America's Dream reminds us the best tracks from Australia's Eddy Current Suppression Ring). The same little clique of magnificent losers from Indianapolis also plays in Big Hog and the Resource Network (two bands responsible for a split-Ep of hysterical hardcore also released on Goodbye Boozy Records back in 2020) or in Painted Trends, a ramshackle, top-class garage-punk combo a la Retail Simps x, that we would love to hear on vinyl.
Pat and the Pissers plaira clairement aux amateurs de gros son violent à la Youth Of Today, DRIet early-Beastie Boys : tempo effréné en mode NYHC entrecoupé de décélération flirtant avec le rap-core, riffs crossover bien gras, option metal sur les solos, le tout servi par une voix méchamment énervée, et pourrait-on dire, superbement hardcore dans la version Washington DC... Il traîne sur ce Ep 5-titres comme une furieuse envie de 'headbanger' dans le pit et de coller quelques taquets bien placés à ses voisins trop agités !
Avec ce Growth, Goodbye Boozy Records sort donc de son credo habituel - le garage-punk lo-fi - tout en nous poussant à découvrir la scène punk DIY d'Indianapolis, dans le mid-west américain. Les curieux approfondiront l'écoute de Pat & the Pissers avec les deux albums démo (le morceau très post-punk et nihiliste America's Dream n'a rien à envier aux meilleurs titres des australiens d'Eddy Current Suppression Ring). Ils redécouvriront la même petite clique de losers magnifiques officiant aussi dans Big Hog et the Resource Network (deux groupes responsables d'un split-Ep de hardcore hystérique sorti sur Goodbye Boozy Records en 2020) ou aux commandes de Painted Trends, un combo de garage-punk déglingué et top classe à la Retail Simps x, et dont on adorerait écouter quelques morceaux en vinyle.
THEEE RETAIL SIMPS – Rubble / Jumpin Jack Off Sp - GOODBYE BOOZY Records - 2023 X
We already talked last January about theee Retail Simps, a band of crazy Canadian garage-punkers x. Remember: the singer of the Toronto's Produters sets up this band with his mates from Montreal, and composes a magnificent potpourri of dirty garage-soul, slum groove and budget-rock, chiselled with acid-rock guitar licks and Velvetian surges. The story culminated in an extraordinary debut album, Reverberant Scratch: 9 Shots In Tha Dark, on Total Punk Records in 2021. A perfect album! So for those who still don't get this band, we're adding another layer today.
This double single Sp stands as the logical link between tha Retail Simps' first LP and its second, Live On Cool Street, recently released on Total Punk Records (check out the awesome review that Nico SDZ's has just made on Redlight Sanatorium x). Jumpin Jack Off has the flavor of the 2021's hit Brain & Stomach, while Rubble, a KBD-style punk nugget, heralds the beastly Wrong Direction. However, this Sp retains its own specificity: the sound is much dirtier, cruder and more direct, the cover much more minimalist, and the whole thing clearly less polished than on the two albums. To make it short: it's fucking punk, it's fucking DIY, it's fucking lo-fi! The Goodbye Boozy's touch, without a doubt.
Justement, theee Retail Simps ! On a déjà parlé de ce groupe de garage-punkers déglingos en janvier dernier x. Souvenez-vous : le chanteur des Produters de Toronto qui monte ce groupe avec ses potes de Montréal, et compose un magnifique pot-pourri de garage-soul cradingue, de groove des bas-fonds et de budget-rock, ciselé de plans acid-rock à la guitare et d'envolées Velvet-iennes, avec à la clé un extraordinaire premier album Reverberant Scratch: 9 Shots In Tha Darksur Total Punk Records en 2021. Un album parfait ! Alors pour ceux qui n'auraient toujours pas compris, on n'hésite pas à en rajouter une couche aujourd'hui.
Ce simple 2-titres se pose donc comme un connecteur logique entre le premier Lp des Retail Simps et le second, Live On Cool Street, sorti tout récemment (aussi) sur Total Punk Records (on lira au passage l'excellente chronique qu'en a faite Nico SDZ sur Redlight Sanatorium x). Jumpin Jack Off à la saveur du tubesque Brain & Stomach de 2021 tandis que Rubble, pépite punk à la sauce KBD, annonce le bestial Wrong Direction. Pour autant, ce Sp garde sa propre spécificité: le son est beaucoup plus sale, brut et direct, la pochette largement plus minimaliste, et l'ensemble est clairement moins léché que sur les deux albums. Pour résumer : c'est punk, DIY et lo-fi ! La patte Goodbye Boozy, sans aucun doute.
