Gigs' Reviews : I Wanna Be Your Kleps ! Johnny Boy Kleps - 03rd of March, 2021 - La Cerise, La Réunion

The year was starting pretty well on Reunion Island. Ok, obviously, not as well as the beginning of 2020, when some of the best international garage bands had played around here - it was sad to understand that the dynamic was definitely broken up.
But the fact that our far-away island had luckily remained rather spared by the virus for almost a year, still allowed us to check a few awesome shows of our local rock'n'roll heros : mesmerizing release party at Le Kabardock for the surf combo Pamela & the Andersons and the psychobilly band Mothra Slapping Orchestra, promising new project for the tropical Italian One-Man-Band Mr Occhio, with an unplugged bluesy/gospel-without-God show…
King Automatic, from Nancy, who had become half a Reunion guy since the Absürd Fest, also played a few times around, and during one of his visit on the island, he had the good idea to take with him a garage French boy of his old pals : Jean-Luc Jousse, aka Johnny Jostone, aka Johnny Boy Kleps

Johnny Boy Kleps

The kind of guy whose life could make another great rock’n’roll novel.
In the mid-80’s, Johnny Boy Kleps x was already taking his shares of the revival garage wave, alongside with all those -tones bands (the Fuzztones, the Fleshtones…) : fuzz guitar, farfisa organs, Sonics-like screaming vocals and 60’s punk sound on a Seeds' way... A few vinyl tracks remained from that period : a single with les Psychedelic Kleps (Fuego Rec., 1994), a Ep with les Klepstones (post-released on Tryptic Rec. in 2009), a song on the 50 Miles Compil Orléans by les Kleps (A7 Rec., 1990).
Woof woof ! The recurrent Kleps word in his bands’ names - kleps means dogs in the French slang - reached a whole sense with the francized cover of the Stooges : I Wanna Be Your Kleps, performed by his new band les Cool Kleps (two Eps in 2010).
The 60’s garage beat was still around, but with some additional touches of Detroit punk sound, proto-punk and garage-blues, as testified later on on his album Cool Soul Cuisine Française by the New York Kleps (Jostone Traffic, 2017), a Lp featuring the singers of the Dictators, the Fleshtones, the Dirtbombs and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. No less !
35 years of rock'n'roll had considerably widened his network indeed. He is also the guy behind Jostone Traffic x, who settled down many gigs around Orleans, France, and organized many European tours for his fav' bands (André Williams, Love, the Seeds, the Fuzztones, the Fleshtonesthe Pretty Things, the Flaming Groovies, the Real Kids, MC5...), the most famous garage punk bands of the 90's (the Oblivians, the Gories, A-Bones, Radio Birdman, Nashville Pusssy, New Bomb Turks, the 5678's...), and some recent top bands too (les Grys Grys, the Baby Shakes...). We can also mention his Asian managing of the Cambodgian Space Project...

The gig at La Cerise was full. Johnny Boy Kleps x, with his friendly looking and touching attitude, standing up alone with his guitar, playing all the minimalist garage riffs he perfectly knew, singing with an enthusiastic, sometimes flickering voice, reviewed all his musical career during a two-hours warm show. A very last moment, full of a whole rock'n'roll grace, to face the forthcoming local lockdown, that wasn't going to stop before long.
