Turning Round On The Turntable : Ruben Riley, Qinqs, Tee Tee Repairmann, Wayne Payne & The Shit Stains, Zhoop, Dadgad, Model Zero, the Surfrajettes, Sinaïve

RUBEN RILEY - Juxtaposition Ep - UNDER HEAT Records - 2022 X

Ruben Riley

Ruben Riley ? Of course you know this guy! He was that outrageously young drummer who played alongside Billy Twyford in Disco Junk x a few years ago. After their happy meeting on that hardcore band, they both set up their own solo project: his was soberly called Ruben Riley x, while his sidekick-singer one was named Billiam x (by the way, check again the band Remote Control x, a band that Billy/iam has recently set up with Ishka Edmeades of Gee Tee x).
The Ep Juxtaposition is aptly named. Because Ruben Riley exactly knows how to play everything and intends to prove it with these four disparate songs. Not The Sharpest Tool is a lo-fi, juvenile and nervous garage-punk tune in the straight line of the recordings of his Nystagmus demo released in 2020. It is followed by two unexpected songs, Amygdala, an instrumental math-rock/post-rock cut, and Head Cleaner, a psychedelic bedroom-pop one with strong Kinks-like vocal intonations. The Ep closes with a very surprising sega tune, the Windmill, worthy of the most beautiful exotica-pop tracks of his compatriots Bananagun or Sunfruits. Hardcore can lead to everything, especially to some very flavorish things.
Some well-known fellows of the Melourne scene are busy around this nice project: his mate Billiam, of course, in charge of the vinyl release with his label Under Heat Records x, Carolyn Hawkins (Parsnip, School Damage...) who signs the splendid impressionist illustration of the cover, and Mikey Young, as always, in charge of the mastering.

Ruben Riley ?

QINQS, TEE VEE REPAIRMANN, WAYNE PAIN & THE SHIT STAINS, ZHOOP/DADGAD - The Winter Batch Eps - GOODBYE BOOZY Records - 2023 X

Goodbye Boozy Winter Batch

Gabriele Di Gregorio, the boss of the Teramo label Goodbye Boozy Records, is still meticulously exploring every nook of every vein of the international lo-fi garage-punk microcosms. Here comes his 2023-winter selection.
From Perth, in the Australian Far West, he has just unearthed the shiny nugget Qinqs x, extracted from the same seam as some of his previous releases (Aborted Tortoise, the Ghoulies, C.P.R. Doll...)
Qinqs is a guitar/drums duo that ventures into the territories of the "cowboys" garage-punk (the three tunes Edgard Allan Poe, the Great White Wonder and Roadkill sound like County Teasers, or more recently Spodee Boy x) as well as it surprisingly wanders into a gloomy cold-wave/dark-punk area (I'm in Hell, SLOB). Two rather dissimilar universes indeed, but the five tracks are really fascinating. A project that we'll follow closely.
Another Australian nugget comes again straight from the inexhaustible gold mine of Sydney, that was inaugurated a few years ago with Gee Tee x. The most prolific member of that terrific band, Ishka Edmeades (R.R.C., Satanic Togas x, Set-Top Box x, Mainframe, Remote Control x...) has set up a new solo project, called Tee Vee Repairmann, that astonished us in 2021 with a first Ep Patterns x. He is coming back ready to strike us again with Organic Mould x, a new Ep that presents four delightful tracks alternating minimalist, bouncy power-pop tunes (Organic_Mould, 2-Big-4-Mah-Boots), synthetic bedroom-pop (Make Up My Mind) and weirdos electro-pop (Drowin') songs. His first album, What's On Tv, just co-released by Total Punk Records - the compulsory Oregon label - and the Australians of Computer Human Race Records, should be a damned good blast.
He also explores the seam of Kansas City, where the band Wayne Pain & The Shit Stains x offers, with its Ep Shut The Fuck Up! I'm On The Phone, four tracks of crazy rock'n'roll, screaming garage and trashy punkabilly that GG Allin wouldn't have denied. Wayne Pain - that's the nickname of the band's leader - used to play in Fag Cop and the Spread Eagles, two great bands of the mid-2000s Missouri garage-punk scene. Curious people will also check his synthetic noise-trash project Future Kill (with a Lp, Mind Trasters, Floor Wasters, released on Big Neck Records in 2021).
We finally discover the last two lo-fi solo projects, as minimalist as they are energetic, that share a same Ep x. Zhoop, from Indiana, plays old-school hardcore while the Italian guy in Dadgad tries himself with the Devo-core style. Six tracks in eight minutes: beware the heart attack !

I'm in Hell, SLOB).
Là-bas, le groupe Wayne Pain & The Shit Stains x offre, avec son Ep Shut The Fuck Up !

MODEL ZERO - Little Crystal/ Leather Trap Sp - SWEET TIME Records - 2022 X

Model Zero

Model Zero
was spotted in 2019 by the tireless Pete of Slovenly Records and won the happy support of the Italian label for the release of its eponymous debut album. The Memphis, Tennessee, band developed on it some rather unusual soundings, between jerky disco-punk, psychedelic acid-rock, kbd punk and weird synth-garage. And guess what ? The band has just reappeared on the radar with this terrific two-track Sp.
Handmade guitar versus Gibson Flying V, double bass, maracas' beats on the drums, wah wah pedal, acid shots on the guitar... The least we can say is that the sound of the track Little Crystal smells good both the exotica dancing and the groovy garage. It could easily be placed alongside the recent Retail Simps x LP (Total Punk Records, 2022). On the B-side, the highly rhythmic track Leather Trap is a pleasant return to the snotty punk recipe of their first album.
Sweet Time Records x has taken over from Slovenly to promote this Model Zero record. This new label, located in Nashville, was founded in 2019 by a former member of the garage-punk band Cheap Time (remember Jeffrey Novak and the good days of the label In The Red Recordings!). And by the way, Sweet Time seems to be pretty involved in the international garage-punk revival, since it has already released a few nice vinyl pieces (Gee Tee, R.R.C., Schizos, as well as the brilliant Sweet Time compilation, which obviously has nothing to envy to the Legless Records' G.T.R.R.C. compilations).

THE SURFRAJETTES - Marshmallow March Sp - HI-TIDE Recordings - 2022 X

The Surfrajettes

Anyone who would like to immerse himself into the contemporary surf music - we're talking here about the good one, the one that remains refreshing, instrumental and deeply rooted in the raw, vintage sound of the early 60s - should forget about California. The American West Coast has been for long quite overrated, and the new heart of this musical subculture stands nowadays around the Great Lakes. Not far from Rochester, on the shores of the Lake Ontario, where the excellent Televisionaries x are highly active, or from Toronto, just across the same lake, where four smiling young women, elegantly dressed in 60's attire, have formed the Surfrajettes - the name of the band indicates that they also seem to have a good sense of humour.

Since 2015, the Surfrajettes have been churning out light-hearted hits with playful, heady melodies, and they don't hesitate to dabble in the sweet ambience of the surf-lounge music as well as to celebrate on their guitars the most popular parties (Halloween, Christmas...). As a proof, the highly jazzy, and nevertheless excellent, All I Want For Christmas Is You, present on the B-side of this single, was played a lot at home on the Christmas evening, while the track Marshmallow March was a pleasant musical background during the sipping of our tropical cocktails by the pool.
With this new single, the Surfrajettes are keeping on living a lovely honeymoon, started in 2017, with the New Jersey label Hi-Tide  Recordings x (one Ep, followed by two singles and the recent Roller Fink album in 2022). Fresh and invigorating, as we said !

SINAÏVE - Super 45t Maxi Ep - ARVO Disques, HIDDEN BAY & HELLZAPOPPIN Records - 2022 X

Sinaïve

Arvo Disques
x, the Grenoble micro-label, is on the rise! After its releases of the Live In Gaul by the Shifters and the perfect demo-tape of the Famous Mammals, it was quite logical to take a close interest in this Super 45t of Sinaïve.
After a rather disappointing first listenning (the Dionysos sounding-like vocals (I don't like Dionysos), the few references to Gainsbourg (I don't like Gainsbourg either), a few hidden FM-pop plans, etc...), the light finally appeared to me on the very last track, the Trash Mental hit. A playful twist, with a nicely ingenuous female voice, and carried by the apparent candour of the young modern people in the band.
However, the lyrics and music of this band are neither dull nor naive (note that 'si naïve' means 'so naive' in French...). And I was right to hang on this record. Sinaïve's lyrics are dark, disillusioned, and even apocalyptic. Its universe is particularly cerebral and emotional. Its music offers a unique, unclassifiable mixture of post-punk sound (Ténèbres and its riff à la Television Personalities' Look Back In Anger), jaded no-folk ballad (Il Faudra Traverser) and groovy acid-rock (Space Ronsard). And of course, the final Trash Mental - a fabulous, resolutely modern twist'n'rock. The whole thing is delivered in a consequent pack of distortions, noisy pop arrangements and atmospheres close to the Paisley Underground. Sinaïve remains an iconoclastic band.
The Toulouse-based label Hidden Bay Records and the Parisian one Hellzapoppin Records were also part of this adventure. We should try someday to dig around those two indie labels too.

Ahh !
