Gigs' Reviews : Lyon Calling (Part IV) - Chaleur Tournante + Touccan - 26th Of May 2022 - Basement Snack/bar, Lyon

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw my two buddies from Lyon, Sam and Romain, both proudly wearing the same T-shirt. I didn't fail to make fun of them, to tell them that they gave them that little side of a team cohesion, modern management and company pride... We had a good laugh.
In any case, the promotional objective of these T-shirts was fully achieved. The drawing, presenting a zombified unicorn, which was furious since her main attribute had been painfully broken, and this name - Chaleur Tournante - with its incandescent typography, had more than intrigued me.

On avait bien rigolé.

Mathieu, Chaleur Tournante

In fact, Mathieu, the drummer of Chaleur Tournante x, was a colleague with whom my friends shared some affinities. He had started his band in the middle of the tenies with his guitarist sidekick, Alexis. The duo had then self-released two demos (Bricolage in 2017 and Musique Cheveux in early 2020, just before the sanitary crisis).
The next day, the listening of the two Cds revealed to me a band sailing in the white waters of the math-rock, post-rock, noise and stoner soundings. The tracks were purely instrumental and emotionally effective, the riffs well crafted and repetitive - in the best sense of the word. There were a multitude of drum and guitar breaks, an ostentatious shoegazing attitude and the packaging was designed with a beautiful dark, black & white drawing. All this could not but please me. Chaleur Tournante brought me back to many memories from my stay in Reims in the mid 2000's, when Chevreuil, 37500 Yens, Pneu, Marvin, etc... were regularly invited to play at the CROUS and in the local MJC.

My friends wanted me to meet Mathieu. They had organized an apéro with him. At the beginning of the evening of this beautiful month of May, we had found him sitting at the terrace of the Basement. This snack bar, located in the popular district of La Guillotière, had become for two years the compulsory meeting place of all the hardcore, post-rock and noise fanatics that Lyon might count. This underground scene seemed to have a strong revival of interest, judging by the impressive number of posters of gigs recently posted everywhere on the walls of the bar. One could easily perceive that delicious taste of the Rad Party and Burn Out nights.
Mathieu was sitting with Clovis, a young hardcore guy of the modern ages. He introduced himself as the guitarist of the band Touccan. Despite an age difference of about fifteen years, both had the same look (beard, thick glasses, black T-shirt...) and quite similar musical tastes. One could have taken them for two brothers. Then, inevitably, the two guys spoke to us about their respective groups, before talking about the Lyon hardcore scene. It was a fascinating discussion, but one I've almost forgotten - most likely all those pints of craft beer drunk together while stuffing nachos and sandwiches dripping with melted cheese - the chef's specialty. I should have taken a recorder.

Les copains tenaient à me faire rencontrer Mathieu.

Clovis, Touccan

The band Touccan x, formed in Lyon in 2018, also deserved some enthusiastic lines. Listening to their tracks a bit later, the sounds smelled good math-rock and emocore - Clovis had in fact advanced the term of post-emocore - and with his buddy Val on drums, the duo seemed particularly comfortable juggling with harmonics and jerky rhythms, alternating throbbing passages, furious accelerations and typically screamo-hardcore screamed voice.
Shortly after our meeting, Touccan released a beautiful 11-track LP, Full Sentimental. A release piloted, in the summer of 2022, by four labels: Ripcore Records x (Scotland), Seaside Suicide Records x (Le Mans), the Northern label Sleepy Dog Records x and Hell Vice I Vicious Records x (an Alpine label that we met around in these columns during the review of Johnnie Carwash's Maxi-Ep, a band we will soon find on the stages of Reunion Island !)
In 2023, it was obvious that the beautiful Touccan bird was going to take off (that one was an easy one...). I was all the more motivated to catch, during a future trip to Lyon, one of their live performance with their buddies from Chaleur Tournante.
