Review of a gig that never happened : the Famous Mammals x, from Oakland, California, at Le Farmer ! That was THE concert of my punk journey to Lyon that shouldn't be missed ! It was also going to be the occasion to meet the crew of the flip-flops' punkers from the Tous En Tong's x association, one of the most active and well-informed French associations of the current post/garage-punk wave. In fact, that awesome association was standing as the Lyon counterpart of Vent Divin and Damaged Good in Nantes, Bitume Rugueux in Toulouse, 45tours de Poitrine in Orléans, Insolence Show in Le Havre, From Town To Town in Rennes, Freaky Loud Things and Buddy Records in Paris, etc... all of which were fully reflecting the dynamism, as explosive as it was enjoyable, of the French DIY punk scene.
The reading of the presentation of the band that the organizers of Tous En Tong had written in the columns of the Lyon's agenda-concert Ville Morte, was more than intriguing. They evoked there the legacy of the Television Personalities, the resemblance with their Aussie cousins of the Shifters, the similarities with the demos of their compatriots of Chronophage. The online listening of the Famous Mammals' demo achieved to convince me : minimalist riffs, nonchalant mixed vocals, magnificent amateurism in the intonations, freshness of the whole thing, sounding mixing with dexterity rhythmic bed-room pop, soaring and haunting arty-punk, and the most percussive, lo-fi sound that post-punk could offer at that time. I couldn't be less than 100% into that approach.
Although the bad memories of the sanitary crisis were fading away and all the restrictions were being lifted one after the other, the Co-Vid virus stroke back one very last time. The band members, after having been through a series of problems since their arrival in France (theft of equipment, vandalization of the van...) were declared positive a few days before their show in Lyon. The concert had to be cancelled. One could easily imagine the disappointment of the thirty-or-so motivated people who would undoubtedly not have failed to come to this glorious and deliciously intimate concert.
So was I, and as my chance to see the Famous Mammals someday was just infime, my only remaining hope was that a vinyl Lp gathering the tracks of their demo cassette (initially out in 2021 on the Grenoble-based label Arvo Records x and the Breton one Utilité: Zéro Records x ) would someday be re-released.
Chronique d'un concert qui n'eut jamais lieu : les Famous Mammals x au Farmer ! C'était pourtant LE concert de cette virée lyonnaise à ne rater sous aucun prétexte ! Cela allait aussi être l'occasion de rencontrer la clique des post-punkers à savates-deux-doigts - on disait comme ça par chez moi - de l'asso Tous En Tong x, qui figurait parmi les quelques associations hexagonales les plus actives et les plus averties de la déferlante garage/post-punk actuelle. Tous en Tong, c'était un peu le pendant lyonnais des nantais de Vent Divin et Damaged Good, des toulousains de Bitume Rugueux, des orléanaises de 45tours de Poitrine, des havrais d'Insolence Show, des rennais de From Town To Town, des parisiens de Buddy Records et Freaky Loud Things, etc... qui tous reflétaient le dynamisme, aussi explosif que jouissif, de la scène française en matière de punk DIY.
La lecture de la présentation, dithyrambique, du groupe californien (Oakland), que les organisateurs avaient proposée aux colonnes de l'agenda-concert lyonnais Ville Morte, m'avait plus qu'intrigué. Ils y évoquaient l'héritage des Television Personalities, la ressemblance avec leurs cousins australiens des Shifters, les similitudes avec les démos de leurs compatriotes de Chronophage. L'écoute de leur démo en ligne m'avaient immédiatement convaincu : riffs minimalistes, chants mixtes nonchalants, intonations fleurant bon l'amateurisme magnifique, fraîcheur de l'ensemble, sonorités mélangeant avec doigté bed-room pop rythmée et arty-punk lancinant, avec ce que le post-punk lo-fi pouvait alors offrir de plus percutant. Je ne pouvais qu'adhérer à 100% à la démarche.
Le virus de la Co-Vid se rappela à nous une toute dernière fois. Au moment où les mauvais souvenirs de la crise sanitaire commençaient à s'estomper, et où toutes les restrictions se levaient les unes après les autres, les membres du groupe, après avoir enchaîné diverses galères depuis leur arrivée en France (vol de matériel, vandalisation du van...) furent déclarés positifs quelques jours avant leur date lyonnaise. Le concert fut donc annulé. On pouvait aisément imaginer la déception de la petite trentaine de personnes motivées qui n'auraient pas manqué de se déplacer à ce concert glorieux et sans nul doute délicieusement intimiste.
Je savais très bien qu'il y aurait bien peu de chance de revoir un jour les Famous Mammals en concert. Il ne me restait plus qu'à espérer qu'une ré-édition vinyle de la magnifique cassette démo rose-punk sortie en 2021 sur les labels Arvo Records x (Grenoble) et Utilité : Zéro x (Bretagne) sortirait prochainement.
