Turning Round On The Turntable : Pinoreks, die Verlierer, Ex-White, Lassie, Lafff Box, Pisse

July/August 2022.  Austral winter has landed on Reunion Island. It's high time to put on a pullover and some pants. There's also a desire to stuff oneself with a good 'sauerkraut', escorted by a jug of 'Berliner Weisse'. As a musical background, we will choose an exclusively German selection : cold-wave from Potsdam, Deutsch-punk from Berlin, garage-punk from Halle, garage/synth-punk from Leipzig, electro-clash/synth-punk from Hoyerswerda. Yeah, we heard it's moving pretty damn well over there !

PINOREKS - Dead Inside Lp - Self-Released - 2022 X

We've been waiting for six long years for this new album of our favorite German cold-wavers, and we're not disappointed!
The guys of Pinoreks x have no equal to explore the human soul, to witness its disenchantments and disillusions, to evoke the depression and its resulting social maladjustment, to describe the inner nothingness and the mental confinement of the individual. They put their finger on what is buried deep inside the Man, they hit with talent the emptiness of things. And when they move on on less personal and deep subjects, it is for better giving a purely organic and mineral depiction of their external environment.
What could be the better musical support for these cold, dark ambiences than a solid base of dark-punk, cold-wave and post-punk ? Pinoreks means perfect melodies, a driving mid-tempo rhythmic section on every track, a guitarist who knows how to play with the alterations of notes, and a singer worthy of Ian Curtis' legacy. With this new album, Dead Inside - such an evocative name - packed in a cardboard sleeve as minimalist and neat as ever, the band from Potsdam, in the Berliner area, makes a great comeback and finds us where it left us after its first three compulsory albums. We can only regret the confidentiality of a band that would deserve the same kind of notoriety as its French brother Frustration.

DIE VERLIERER - Die Verlierer Lp - MANGEL Records - 2022 X

The clip Das Mann Im Mond from the Berliner band die Verlierer x is a real bomb ! The post-apocalyptic, disturbing atmosphere which reigns on this tune is served by a very dark, cold-punk sound and carried up by a juvenile voice, belched from the deepest guts of the singer. A poignant track ! It was enough to explore this first album of die Verlierer.
The least we can say is that the five Germans perfectly master their classics. The sound is indeed a joyful synthesis of the best of 45 years of punk rock : punk-77 (die Zeit, with its Magazine's Shot By Both Sides-like riff), early-Oi with Sham 69-like hooligans' choirs (die VerliererDeadgirl), KbD Deutsch-punk, with a typical 80's guitar sounding (Intrige und LibidoNichts Funktioniert), dirty post-punk (X-Ray VisionPlastic Life), dancing cold-wave (Mann Im Mond) and even a soaring, almost psychedelic 'UFO' full of drone layers (Into A). The whole thing is largely sprinkled with a contemporary garage-punk base, and served by lyrics sailing between nihilism and simple daily-life stories. Moreover, the picture on the album's cover shows five smart, almost dandy, post-punkers, and could have been taken in 1979, while a recent video shows them all playing with a really working/nihilistic look (mullets, 80's short pants, wifebeaters - the perfect cliché of the elegance of the German campers!). Die Verlierer seems therefore to be the perfect synthesis of all the most striking punk trends, whether it be on a musical level, the look, the lyrics, the attitude, etc... To make it short, the band is a big, big favorite at Shut Up & Play the Music!
The guys from die Verlierer had the good idea to release this Lp, initially self-produced on tape, on a vinyl version on their own label Mangel Record x. A label to follow closely in its exploration of a Berliner scene that seems still as lively as ever (listen with attention to LiiekPigeonMaskeK.A.O.S....). Mangel Records should also release soon the second album of the American post-punkers the Drin.

EX-WHITE - Estray Maxi Ep - TURBO DISCOS Records - 2022 X

We leave now Berlin to find ourselves 150km South/Westbound, in the region of Leipzig, more precisely in Halle-sur-Saale. A new small label, Turbo Discos Records x, has just been set up there, and is supporting a bunch of great local bands with the release of a punk-rock series of real nuggets. Let's go for a detailed review right now...

The Ex-White is a band closely linked to the Turbo Discos Records' crew, and has been active for more than three years. They released some nice demo-tapes on micro-labels (FennenKuba SalamiDo the Math Rec...) as well as on the excellent label Phantom Records, and they are now moving up a gear with the vinyl release of the maxi-Ep Estray, and a brand new split Ep with the Americans of the Gobs.
The Ex-White has clearly refined its sounding, going beyond the crazy, minimalist garage/post-punk sound of its first recordings, to offer a huge blast of powerful, totally juicy garage-punk tunes. Eight tracks in 17 minutes, executed without a pause, all fautless and explosive, and carried by brilliantly heady melodies. It smells a bit like those garage-punk bands from the noughties (think Jay Reatard and LiveFastDieHidden Charms and Hex Dispensers...) with, as a bonus and for the touch of modernity - after all, we are living in 2022! - some typically post-punk musical plans. Fantastic!
The subjects of the songs deal with love, with the daily loose, and here again, with all those stimulating everyday little things. But there's also a highly sensitive subject around there. THE major threat, in my opinion, for our modern societies, a totally trans-societal plague federating any kinds of extremists, and standing on the political field along the extreme bottom : the Conspiracy Theory. A subject that is too rarely discussed (and we agree 200% with the Ex-White's approach).

LASSIE - Temporary Cemetery Sp - TURBO DISCOS Records - 2022 X

The German three girls and two boys from Leipzig playing in Lassie x have the same kind of background as their German fellows in Ex-White (with which, by the way, the band shared a split-Ep tape). A series of self-released demo tapes (on Do the Math! Records, a label that we have already met with the excellent Ep Smoke the Boatby Nathan Roche) and a nice first vinyl Ep, Gimme a Break, on Cuerdas Fuera Records in 2019. The serious things have begun since this 2022 spring, when they were spotted by the German label Phantom Records  and took advantage of its wide distribution network. The result was both a Lp compilation of the first recordings and a first album, BeholdTemporary Cemetery, their second single, was released at the same time by their friends from Turbo Discos Records x.
The eponymous track is a blast. Probably because of the devastating mixed vocals (check this Alex Cuervo-like male voice and the P. Science-like female vocals), the perfect riff on the chorus - a pure garage/synth-punk melody in the straight line of the SpitsEpoxies and Hex Dispensers - and the lyrics (in English) dealing with an truthful associability. The track on the B-side, Frowning Terms, presents a more destructured, eggy and crazy post-punk side, reflecting the half-foolish (but more bantering) subject of the song (yes, the internet 'Captcha' are really uptight...). The record is provided with a QCM with surrealist and funny ecolo-psychological questions. Phew! Everything goes well, the group does not miss humour !

LAFFF BOX - Lafff Box Ep - TURBO DISCOS Records - 2022 X

Gather the same crew together (a few members of LassieEx-WhiteLiiek...), shake the thing up, look at what's coming out, and give the recordings to the team of Turbo Discos Records x. The result will be this marvelous 7'' of Lafff Box x.
Well, once again, I'm going to give the same lost references of an old 'schmock' who was struck by the 2000's garage-punk wave. It has left some traces... Lafff Box reminds me a lot of the Kidnappers, a German band too. It plays fast, it's nervous, it's fresh and joyful, it smells the youth, the magnificent losers, the glorious band of friends and the will of revenge on a not-easy adolescence... Everybody sings at the same time, the public jumps around, and in a few words, people have lots of fun - it has become vital to forget ourselves a bit in this endless series of shitty crisis.
We're looking forwards to the next records !

PISSE - Lambada Ep - PHANTOM Records - 2022 X

We have just seen, through the reviews of the two brand new records of Lassie and Ex-White, that the label Phantom Records x stands hidden in ambush. A German label, also located in the region of Leipzig, and quite well distributed in France, that we have already met here and there for about ten years. We loved, for instance, the Lp of La Vase in 2018 (very dark German punk-rock which strangely reminded us La Dérive of the Incontinents), we appreciated the trashy death-punk of Fix...
One of the protégé of the label is undoubtedly Pisse x . Phantom Records has already released 2 Lps, a 10", three Eps and a bunch of demo-tapes of the band since 2014. The atmosphere surrounding Pisse's recordings borders on the crazyness, the non-sense, the end of civilization and the spirit of the 'No-Future' years. The very name of the band, abject and disgusting, evokes the sewers of a decadent society in a full decline.
Musically, the 7-titles ep Lambada is full of Germanic electro-clash, aggressive synth-punk, weirdo EBM, sticky dark-waves and post-industrial soundings, with stressful synth parts and raw skinned-alive voices. It makes us think a lot of all those bands released on Teenage Menopause RecordsKaka Kids Records, or the Belgian Ero Guro and our local heroes of Kilkil... The final track, the very quirky Favorit, carries pretty well its name, and brightly closes this Ep with a romantic radio tune, played on a highly lo-fi way and sang in German, worthy of the MariLou song by our national dark-waver Usé.
