Section 26 still stands as the best French web sites for DIY pop & post-punk. In June 2023, the webzine took advantage of Ribbon Stage's first European tour to interview the New York trio. The sincerity of their words and the spontaneity of their music have pushed us to take an active interest in their records.
With Ribbon Stage, we discover a largely feminised band with edgy compositions that clearly lean back on both the feminine post-punk of the early 80s (Kleenex, Dolly Mixture, Girls At Our Best...) and the girly indie garage-pop revival of the mid-2000s (Dum Dum Girls, Plexi 3, Vivian Girls, Miss Chain & the Broken Heels...). The melodies are delicate and flavored with atmospheres reminiscent of melancholy and quarter-life crisis. Ribbon Stage deserves a place of choice between its contemporary alter egos Purrses x, Sinaïve x, Cherry Pickles x or Famous Mammals x.
After an awesome debut Ep, My Favorite Shrine, released on vinyl in 2020 on Olympia, WA's indie label, K Records (Old Time Relijun, Go Team... ), featuring 5 tunes of deliciously raw, minimalist garage-pop feel (we can't help but think of the Godzillas' Beast In You track) - Ribbon Stage has beefed up its sound with reverb effects and noisy plans. The result is the aptly named Hit With The Most 11-track LP (released at the end of 2022 with an impeccable production on K Records again, in co-production with another Olympia's indie-pop label, Perennial Records). It seems impossible not to fall under the spell of this band.
Section 26 reste LA référence française en matière de pop DIY et de post-punk. En juin dernier, ce webzine profitait de la première tournée européenne de Ribbon Stage, pour proposer dans ses colonnes l'interview du trio new-yorkais. La sincérité des propos et la spontanéité de leur musique nous avaient mis l'eau à la bouche.
Avec Ribbon Stage, on découvre donc un groupe largement féminisé, offrant des compositions nerveuses lorgnant clairement vers le post-punk féminin du début des années 80 (Kleenex, Dolly Mixture, Girls At Our Best...) et le revival girly du garage-pop-indé du milieu des années 2000 (Dum Dum Girls, Plexi 3, Vivian Girls, Miss Chain & the Broken Heels...), tout en proposant des mélodies délicates et des ambiances fleurant bon la mélancolie, le vague à l'âme et la crise de la vingtaine. Ribbon Stage mérite une place de choix entre ses alter égos contemporains Purrses x, Sinaïve x, Cherry Pickles x et Famous Mammals x.
Après un premier Ep 5-titres remarquable - My Favorite Shrine, sorti en 45tours en 2020 sur le label indé d'Olympia, WA, K Records (Old Time Relijun, Go Team...) - et à la teneur garage-pop délicieusement brute et minimaliste (on ne peut s'empêcher de penser au Beast In You des Godzillas), les Ribbon Stage ont musclé leur son à coup de réverbérations et de plan noise pour aboutir fin 2022 au bien nommé Hit With The Most (K Records là encore, en coproduction avec l'autre label indie-pop d'Olympia Perennial Records), un Lp de 11 titres à la production impeccable. Impossible de ne pas succomber au charme de ce groupe.
CHERRY CHEEKS - Cherry Radio Ep - UNDER THE GUN Records - 2022 X
Cherry Cheeks is the solo project of Kyle Harms, a young guy with a magnificent loser's style - mustache, blond mullet haircut and a no-God-No-Master joyful attitude - who's grown up with the whole American junk-punk sound and its concomitant DIY ethic. He set up this combo in Portland, Oregon, at the height of the pandemic and self-produced a few demo tapes through 2020, before being spotted by the Portland label Total Punk Records (tha Retail Simps x, New Buck Biloxi x, Sick Thought...).
The two albums released in 2021 and 2023 on this structure (Second Album has just been released) both offer a large palette of egg-punk/Devo-core à la Research Reactor Corp or Prison Affair x (Boxes, Trickin', DAC, Hard Stancing, Explode, DATA...), garage/synth-punk in the vein of Gee Tee x, Spoodee Boy x and Lassie x (Boxes, Bunnie Does Ice, Moral Succubus, Ad Shark...) and synth-pop played the same way as 1800-Mickey x and Tee Vee Repairmann x (Go Outside, Two Bugs, Gone, Switch...).
The Cherry Radio Ep draws from the same source as the two Lps and provides a nice testimony of the pivotal year 2022 for Cherry Cheeks, as the solo project turned then into a real band (drums replacing the drum machine, first real live performances with musicians...). This 6-track Ep has been released on vinyl by the Californian label Under The Gun Records (Men & Health x, Remote Control x, Billiam x, Lothario, New Buck Biloxi...). A last proof, if any were needed, that Cherry Cheeks has become a key player in this new, very pleasing International of the lo-fi garage-punk sound.

Ce 6-titre est sorti en vinyle sur le label californien Under The Gun Records (Men & Health x, Remote Control x, Billiam x, Lothario, New Buck Biloxi...), preuve, s'il en fallait une de plus, que Cherry Cheeks est devenu un acteur incontournable de cette nouvelle, et au combien réjouissante, Internationale du garage-punk lo-fi.
THEE CHA CHA CHAS - Our Love/Rock'n'Roll Till I'm Dead Sp - FOLC Records - 2023 X
Rock'n'Roll Till I'm Dead! Yeah, we're all in for that! Especially when it's as devilishly efficient and well played as these two tracks by thee Cha Cha Chas!
Thee Cha Cha Chas, from Melbourne, Australia, are both a duo on stage and a couple in life. Kylie Coufos plays the bass and sings, while Lluis Sanchez, illustrator known as FuzzHound and ex-member of Midnight Woolf (Australian band from the 2000s with a 60s/fuzz garage vibe), plays the guitar with a very Chuck Berry's style while kicking a wild mid-tempo on his minimalist drum kit (bass drum/snare drum). The result is a skilful blend of rock'n'roll and garage-punk that might be put alongside Shannon & the Clams, the Courettes x or the Exbats x. The formula and format are also reminiscent of the most well-known garage-punk duo: King Khan & the BBQ.
After releasing a few great Eps, split-Eps and Sps (Soundflat Records, Outta Space Records, Folc Records...) and having scoured the Australian garage-punk scene for the last ten years or so, thee Cha Cha Chas seem to have climbed a serious step. The release of Our Love and Rock'n'Roll Till I'm Dead - two awesome tracks with a unique flavor - on the Madrid label Folc Records (Johnny Casino x, les Lullies x...), has just gone along with their smashing entrance into the garage-punk 'Big League' : a Spanish tour in autumn 2023, the Funtastic Dracula Carnival festival, the We're Loud Festival (Mediterranean cruise!), and obviously, much more is going to come... When the perseverance of a band is transformed into talent, the God of rock'n'roll is always quick to bestow His favours.
Rock'n'Roll Till I'm Dead ! Le rock'n'roll jusqu'à la mort... Ouais, on adhère au mot d'ordre ! Surtout lorsqu'il est aussi diablement efficace et bien foutu qu'avec ces deux titres balancés par les Cha Cha Chas!
Thee Cha Cha Chas ? Un duo sur scène et un couple à la ville - d'ailleurs la ville, c'est encore et toujours Melbourne - avec elle, Kylie Coufos, à la basse et au chant, et lui, Lluis Sanchez, illustrateur connu sous le nom de FuzzHound et ex-membre des Midnight Woolf (groupe australien des années 2000 tapant dans le garage 60's/fuzz), jouant de la guitare à la manière de Chuck Berry tout en frappant un mid-tempo très minimaliste sur son kit de batterie (grosse caisse/caisse claire). La sortie de Our Love et Rock'n'Roll Till I'm Dead, deux excellents titres à la saveur unique, sur le label madrilène Folc Records (Johnny Casino x, les Lullies x...), s'accompagne pour le duo d'une entrée fracassante dans la cours des grands : tournée espagnole à l'automne 2023, festival Funtastic Dracula Carnival, croisière méditerranéenne dans le cadre du We're Loud Festival, etc... Quand la persévérance d'un groupe se transforme en talent, les Dieux du rock'n'roll s'empressent toujours de lui accorder toutes leurs faveurs.
RATA NEGRA - Bien Triste Sp - LA VIDA ES UN MUS Records - 2023 X
It's not easy to pin Rata Negra down to a particular genre. We could point to the similarities with some obscure 90's gothic tunes (Forthcoming Fire's Feuer, Pink Turns Blue's Walking On Both Sides...). Or detect feminist anarcho-punk a la Honey Bane and feminised post-punk/KBD punk a la Nixe. We could pick out a few surf soundings a la Messer Chups, or associate the Madrid trio with the contemporary wave of the Hispanic punk-hardcore (Mess x, Secta, Generacion Suicida...). In fact, Rata Negra is a band that could be described as transversal, meaning that it is equally at home on the whole underground punk scenes, from hardcore to Oi, from post-punk to garage-punk. A kind of convening figure, as long as the DIY punk ethic is preserved.
La Vida Es Un Mus (the Chisel x, Rixe, Diät, Belgrado, Institute...) remains the faithful travelling companion of the trio. In 2019, the Anglo-Spanish label released the brilliant Qué Tendra, recorded on the macabre Sp La Hija del Sepulturero. Two years later, we got Rata Negra's 2017 debut album Oido Absoluto (co-produced with Beat Generation Records) from the Reunionese anarco-punk distro Patatrax Diskak. It was the opportunity to put an ear to the next two Lps (Justicia Cosmica in 2018 and Una Vida Vulgar in 2021), as well as the 2014 album Nueva Numancia recorded by their previous anarco/synth-punk combo Juanita Y Los Feo.
The 2-title Sp Bien Triste was released last spring 2023 on the same label. The track Ella Está En Fiestas returns to Rata Negra's unique recipe - mix of musical genres, 80's guitar soundings and harmonics, beautiful melodies, piercing female vocals, deep melancholy - while the eponymous track dives into the darkest corner of the dark waves. Bien Triste is a magnificent track worthy of the Kavinsky/Lovefoxxx's Nightcall.
Pas facile de caser Rata Negra dans un genre en particulier. On pourrait évoquer des similitudes avec quelques obscurités gothiques des années 90 (Feuer de Forthcoming Fire, Walking On Both Sides de Pink Turns Blue...). Ou y détecter des plans anarco-punk féministe à la Honey Bane et une touche punk KBD féminisé à la Nixe. Y relever quelques sonorités surf à la Messer Chups, ou carrément associer le trio madrilène à la vague contemporaine du punk-hardcore hispanique (Mess x, Secta, Generacion Suicida...). En fait, Rata Negra, c'est un groupe qu'on pourrait qualifier de transversal, c'est à dire aussi à l'aise sur les scènes de l'underground punk, du hardcore à la Oi, du post-punk au garage-punk. Une sorte de figure de rassembleur, dès lors que l'éthique du punk DIY est préservée.

Le Sp 2-titre Bien Triste est sorti au printemps 2023 sur le même label. Le morceau Ella Está En Fiestas renoue avec la recette unique de Rata Negra - mélange des genres musicaux, jeu sur les harmoniques, sonorités de guitare 80's, mélodies splendides, voix féminine perçante, vague à l'âme omniprésent - tandis que le titre éponyme se frotte carrément à la plus sombre des dark wave. Bien Triste est un morceau digne du Nightcall du tandem Kavinsky/Lovefoxxx. Magnifique !
RIVE DROITE COUNTRY CLUB - Antifête Ep - DANGER Records - 2023 X
"Et j'vis comme une boule de flipper, qui roule, qui roule!'' This cover song of the Corynne Charby's hit Boule de Flipper (Polydor, 1986), composed then by the timeless, iconoclastic artist Christophe, is really top-notch. Christophe undoubtedly wrote some of the finest pages in the history of the 80's French new wave, and most of today's French new wave/synth-pop revival bands (Music On Hold, Ray Jane, Saintes, Alexis Lumière...) owe him a lot. His death by Covid in April 2020 shook us all to the core.
But we're not going to deal with his obituary today. Because, we're much more here (not) to celebrate the release of Rive Droite Country Club's Ep Antifête ('anti-party') on Danger Records (Sex Crime, Danger, Mary Bell...), a label that is making a great comeback after a four-year absence.
The band hails from Paris, as suggested by its name, and is made up of four young, lively women and a boy who seems to be the happiest men on earth. Together, they play French garage/synth-punk, alternating feminist themes in a Riot Grrrl vein (consent on La Honte, male toxicity on Stevie Cigale) with lighter subjects (Bunny, Bunny). Old Froggy fogies will associate Rive Droite Country Club with French bands from the 2000s such as Les Punaises (same vocal intonations), Fury Furyzz and Mil Macaras, while budding rockers will lean towards current combos such as Mary Bell and Oh No, It's Diva! But whatever the references, Rive Droite Country Club offers a refreshing, spontaneous, unpretentious punk rock that actively reflects the contemporary claims of our youth. We can't help but agree 100%!

On ne se lancera pas aujourd'hui pour autant dans sa nécrologie... On est plutôt réuni ici pour (ne pas) célébrer la sortie du Ep Antifête de Rive Droite Country Club sur Danger Records (Sex Crime, Danger, Mary Bell...), label qui signe ici un retour réussi après quatre années d'absence. Le groupe vient de Paris, comme son nom l'indique, et est composé de quatre jeunes femmes pleines d'entrain et d'un garçon qui semble être le plus heureux des hommes. Ensemble, ils tapent dans le garage/synth-punk français et alternent thématiques féministes sur une lignée Riot Grrrl - le consentement (La Honte), la toxicité masculine (Stevie Cigale) - et sujets plus légers (Bunny, Bunny). Les vieux croutons rapprocheront Rive Droite Country Club de certains groupes français des années 2000 comme les Punaises (mêmes intonations de voix), Fury Furyzz ou Mil Macaras, tandis que les rockeurs en herbes pencheront davantage vers des combos actuels tels que Mary Bell ou Oh No, It's Diva!. Du punk rock rafraîchissant, spontané, sans grande prétention et portant activement les revendications contemporaines de notre jeunesse. On ne peut qu'adhérer à 100%!
