Turning Round On The Turntable : Televisionaries, Purrses, Warm Exit, Love Cans, Sun Cousto.

Shut Up & Play the Music has ever preferred the vinyl short formats (SP, EP, Maxi-EP...) to the longer (and often more boring) ones.
Even if the LPs have, by far, a better price-quantity ratio, the short formats have the advantage to capture, with just a few tracks, a snapshot of the life of a band - ie, its best, highly qualitative and spontaneous moments : their happy first recordings, their best songs and hits, their short-lived events and private experiences, their musical experimentations and evolutions, the structural changes in the band...
The last singles of TelevisionariesLove Cans and Sun Cousto, and the awesome EPs of Warm Exit and Purrses, stand for a demonstration.

TELEVISIONARIES - Charlotte Beach/Cuckoo Clock SP - HI-TIDE RECORDINGS - 2021 X

Televisionaries

Televisionaries is a band from Rockin' Rochester, NY, that loves to explore all the aspects of the surf music movement. They left us back in 2019 with four instrumental, ingeniously oldschool tunes, that fully appropriated the musical universe of the Trashmen, with a few noticeable incursions into the world of Bill Haley or the Troggs.
Ram-A Lam-A was followed the next year by the brilliant Spit On My Rubber EP, featuring four tunes, played together with Bloodshot Bill the Giant, and mixing surf music, 50's rock'n'roll and garage. The two EPs were released by Hi-Tide Recordings x. The New Jersey label seems to be the adequate partner of the whole generation of bands which have started all together to ride along the same wave of surf music, exotica and vintage soundings (the Sufrajettesthe VolcanicsSlowey & the Boats, etc... or the frenchies in Agamemnonz, which we might talk about very soon).
With their new single, Televisionaries are back to the surfin' world of the early 60's. They remain faithful to the traditional sound of that movement (check those baritone saxophone's surges, which are played on some Tornadoes' or Ventures' ways !), but momentarily leave apart the reverberation, the Dick Dale's onomatopoeia and the strictly instrumental songs, to take up the Surfin' USA period of the Beach Boys.
Charlotte Beach and Cuckoo Clock are two sick, highly danceable tunes, full-filled of that carelessness we could find amidst the 60's, and the band borrows to the Californian band a Brian Wilson-like voice and some jovial juvenile choirs. By the way, the initial frame of Televisionaries is based on a brotherhood of three young brothers, as was the one of the Beach Boys, and they seem to have a good sense of humor too, because, even if the sound and all the surf music codes are around on the song Charlotte Beach, the song deals with a beach on the Lake Ontario, a place that isn't known as the best one for riding sessions.
Televisionaries is going to step Europe for the first time in a fortnight and tour Spain during early February. You, lucky guys there !

PURRSES - Wrong Tide EP - ROCKERILL/ BELLY BUTTON/ JAUNE ORANGE RECORDS - 2021 X

Purrses

The Rockerill! That name should appeal to some rockers from La Réunion... Rockerill Records is indeed the label that has just released Clermont-Ferrand, the last album of our local synth-punkers in Kilkil. We're going to talk (again) about that band pretty soon, as they'll be playing (and organizing) the next Rock à la Buse in March. Meanwhile, you ought to check their great LP !
Beyond that little story linked to the rock scene on Reunion Island scene, the Rockerill is an arty place, located in the industrial wastelands of Charleroi, Belgium, and a bar that organises many gigs. It's also a collective team of punk activists (check the Dites 33 ! short vidéos, for instance), and a label that supports most of the Belgian bands of the current rock'n'roll wave (Ero GuroLe Prince HarryTuff GuacKeeper Volantthe WRS... just to name a few of them). Thus, every year, Rockerill Records x releases many of their records, mostly co-produced with a few other awesome Belgian labels around : Ronnie Rex in Dienst, Belly Button x in Antwerp, Drink & Drive x and Humpty Dumpty in Brussels, Jaune Orange x in Liège, Love Mazout Rec in Lille, etc...
A strongly organized territorial grid, an efficient networking between the bands and a regular collaboration between some flourishing labels can explain the full vitality of the underground Belgian scene, that has become a real breeding ground for many young sprouts. Let's have a little focus on two of them, both coming from Brussels and having recorded a new EP last year : Warm Exit and Purrses.

The first 4-tracks Ep of the band Purrses is a huge blast ! Is that because of the so-feminine positive attitude and self-confidence of the girls (by the way, the band still features a lost boy among the three girls) ? Is it due to the super-dancing tunes, which are both cool and emotional ? Perhaps is it because of the nonchalant, vaguely androgynous, voice of the female guitarist/lead singer ? Or maybe is that the clear sound of the band, cruising on the muddy waters of the lo-fi homemade/bedroom pop, the low-tension power-pop, the melancholic garage and the stylish post-punk... Much too punk to be sorted in the pop, much too pop to be classified as punk, explained the girls in a recent interview. Indeed, we can't say it better ! But whatever the reasons for that crush on Purrses, the band has the same class as Kleenex/Liliput, and the same elegance as Television Personalities...
Hey Girl ! You've got the thing, and we're looking forwards to hearing your next records!

WARM EXIT – S/t EP - ROCKERILL/ BELLY BUTTON/ DRINK & DRIVE/ LOVE MAZOUT RECORD - 2021 X

Warm Exit

Warm Exit is another young band from Brussels, and features three guys and a girl in their late twenties/early thirties, and yeah, they look like some perfect slackers, with their stylish mullets, tight shorts, sunglassess, minimalist fancy dresses and don't-care attitude.
In a two years time, they have recorded two EPs - both self-released (Drink & Love Records) or co-released by a bunch of Belgian labels - and with those two records, Warm Exit has fully managed its admission's exam to the Gee Tee's Aussie modern school of lo-fi synth punk. Take shelter, guys ! It's a world invasion !
Pretty difficult not to love that kind of shit ! Check that : quick tempo, DIY garage punk guitar riffs, Saints' lineage in the sound, Devo-like quirky lines on the synthesizer, nervous voice closed to madness, female meowings for the choirs, and a tasty budget rock atmosphere. The band could easily stand on the next Legless RecordsGTRRC compilation.

LOVE CANS - PrimitiveBad Trip SP - TAHINI RECORDS - 2021 X

Love Cans

La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neufchâtel canton, Switzerland. The town is a stunning aggregation of old factory floors, working class ancient buildings and bourgeois houses, and was added in 2009 to the UNESCO World Heritage List. While the factory-shaped town used to be the world capital for the watch-making, it seems now to be stuck in time. But it surprisingly has a few rock'n'roll vivid shallows.
I must have read a few things about the punk scene of the city in a review of the Toulousan fanzine Dig It (RIP). Or perhaps was that during the few talks we had with Mr Occhio about the Digler's brothers ? You know, their acid rock/psyche band Hallelujah Mother Helpers, and their label Burning Sound Records, that co-released Mr Occhio's Hard Boiled album ten years ago... If you dig a bit deeper, you'll find also another little structure, Tahini Records x (sub-label of the Swiss indie rock Hummus Records), that lately released the last single of Love Cans, and the first one of Sun Cousto.
When the members of the Digler's tribe put aside, for a short while, the seriousness and the psychedelia of the band Hallelujah Mother Helpers, they let their primary rage burst out on the lo-fi side-project called Love Cans. The trio band plays then some really powered-up, raw 60's garage tunes, fulfilled with farfisa organs, trashy, sharp guitar riffs and wild beasts' shouts, the whole thing being surrounded by a fun aura full of good laughs (check the funny video clip of the song Primitive !). Love Cans looks like a dirty version of the Fuzztones, the same way as their Swiss fellows in Sex Organs do, or the Italian Intellectuals did fifteen years ago...
After two singles and the equivalent of an EP, all released in a six years' time on Sacred Hood & Burning Sound RecordsLove Cans is finally back with the two well-named new songs, Primitive and Bad Trip.
Some primitive rock'n'roll, indeed !

Primitif, quoi!

SUN COUSTO - Do You Wanna Die ?Tickets To Lima SP - TAHINI RECORDS X

Sun Cousto

Sun Cousto, a female, weirdos duo band, providesanother (bad) trip in the same old city and the same rock'n'roll shallows, but on a rather different, quirky way...
At first listen, Do You Wanna Die ? and Tickets To Lima, may appear a bit irritating, as the two mocking girls use, and overuse, some repetitive, malicious, and chanted ad nauseam ritornellos, that remain in the head the whole day. The band could desserve a few mean remaks for that, something like : Please ! Please ! Buy your damned fucking ticket to Lima and leave us alone !, or : Of course, we ALL fucking want some more sex !
But it would be a shame not to go beyond that... Because at the end, we really like that weird mixture of arty ballads, rhythmic post-punk played on a Mil Mascaras way, and Breeders-like noisy/grunge surges. We also love the contrast, on each song, between the two voices of the girls: the Björk-like crytal-clear voice of the drummer, versus the abrupt, tremulous, and not always true one of the guitarist, that sounds like a female version of Dan Treacy's voice, the singer of Television Personalities (that band, once again !?). We enjoy their first album too, Satan And I Walk Under A Rainbow, released in 2019 by We Don't Make It Records (the Swiss label that co-released the first two Leopardo's albums, just before SDZ Records put out Malcantone in 2021). And, we finally admire the freshness and the flippancy of the two girls, the anti-conformism and the fake-amateurism of their songs, and the crudeness of their lyrics. Bravo !

Bravo !
