Gigs' Reviews : Absürd Festival, Co-Vid Premises or How to Miss the 2020 Rock à la Buse festival...

Absürd Festival, Co-Vid Premises or How to Miss the 2020 Rock à la Buse festival...

You’d better avoid airports for a while, at least until we know much better this virus, and be mentally prepared for it! This wasn’t a misplaced disaster-mongering, my girlfriend’s brother and his wife, both French surgeons in Nancy, had seriously informed us, during a post-Christmas stay in the mainland, that something really bad, much more vicious than an ordinary flue, was on its way from China. It was pretty clear that this would occur someday, human high pressure on nature had lasted for much too long, and we had finally managed to reach the stage where, on a basic action/re-action principle, Mother Nature was powerfully fighting back the cancer of humanity with one of its secret potion.
One month and a half later, She was winning the battle : Chinese containment had miserably failed, European countries realized at last that it was too late to avoid the spreading, news from Italy were really bad, many cases were popping up in the East of France and it was just a question of days before it reached our far-away island.

Absürd Festival - 29th of February 2020 - Le Kabardock
Absürd Festival - 29 Février 2020 - Le Kabardock

All this was coming up to mind during the early-March One-Man-Band festival at Le Kabardock, and appeared to me on a so obvious, unmistaken way, kind of a deep awareness that was also triggering me down into some wacky compounded paranoia - let’s keep an eye on those feverish guys and avoid close contacts, as usual in fact… Perhaps a side-effect of that night's festive cocktail of sticky tropical heat, beers’ high consumption and local weeds - this pirates' party was, for sure, going to be the last kicking one before long and the event had to be fully seized up, hadn’t it ?

Warren Hasawa x, an impressive Seychelles-born entertainer, was opening the night for a spare audience. Dressed like a Tahitian White Wizzard, half way Hindu Shaman, half way Ti Bois sorcerer, he was sweating kindness and generosity, and was launching some weirdos incantations which seemed to target those up-coming malicious spirits of the Nature. Ok, I was high and there had also been a precedent with my kids, who had already met the multi-faced artist on an art session in a local library and had come back with a highly inhabited, on a trickster spiritual way, moulted Voodoo mask, so, I might have missed the point. However, his words' playing, his exotic dialects and his magical gestures, combined with some cheerful fatalism facing adversities - Aita Pea Pea, lé pas grave, aucune d'importance, nothing really matters, everything is absurd... - were deeply sticking with my state of mind.

The organizers of the promising Absürd x festival had also done a damned good job and invited a few little punk structures to settled down their stands downstairs, a good oportunitiy to check the releases of the new local vinyl factory plant RUN RUN Records, the street-art/opinion shaper fanzine Dégourdi Sans Malice or the Voodoo Rhythm Records back-catalogue, to get some stuff from the anarco-punk Patatrax Distrax (Traitre, Youth Avoiders, REST fanzines...), or to find in the Vinyl RUN’s boxes some low-price vinyls (the Branlarians’ LP, the old Roadrunners’ Maxi-Lp) and to have interesting talks with that shop seller - by the way, if ever he reads this, the long-out-of-print bible of any French rocker, La Discographie Vinyle du Rock Français 1977-2000, is now available on-line on Euthanasie Records’ web site. The sweaty atmosphere was cool and surrounded by the cithara play, the Kathmandu’s psychedelic sound and the weeds’ smell of Wanaï Jan, a solo hippy guy performing in his van.
Christian Bergoglio*, the nice co-organizer of Le Kabardock’s event, had also invited Shut Up & Play the Music* to introduce the first issue of its fanzine. Business report ? Pretty confident at the beginning with a few copies sold to some faithful readers of the blog, it quickly turn out into a commercial fiasco : same amount given away to some artists and friends, a few « borrowed » on my open stand - pretty demotivating indeed to stay downstairs as the gig, the bar and air conditioning were upstairs - and the final conclusion was that business requested some outgoing attitudes incompatible with that night’s paranoid state of mind.

Upstairs, RémiBricaBrack was opening the hostilities. With his classy mafia suit, his Clark Gable’s smart little mustache, his revolved eyes and crazy attitude, he was standing up, simultaneously playing an aggressive 50’s sound on the guitar and strongly kicking a minimalist drum-set with the right feet. He launched a wild bunch of Cramps-like rockets full of vintage monsters, pin-ups and Z movies' adorable clichés. The guy has been on the island for a long time, he locally opened some shows for the Washington Dead Cats a decade ago and had also been part of many local rock’n’roll bands : Star Cheap Trop Peur, Son Of Ze Beach*…
Mr Occhio*, our now well-known One-Man-Band took over from him and played a couple of his Italian songs, with his awesome delta blues & rock’n’roll own way.

The place was now full - ok, let’s breathe and calm down, this shitty virus shouldn’t have arrived in yet - and the crowd was on top when Mr Marcaille, the third artist, entered the stage. Impressive beer belly of the guy who seemed to come straight from a Tolkien tavern, impressive play on his brutalized cello, impressive 30’minutes run on the double pedals of his customized drums, impressive screaming low voice, impressive messy sound, and finally, an impressive show, regardless hardcore death metal, or whatever it was called, had never been my cup of tea. The guy, from Northern France/Belgium, hung around in the musical nebula of Et Mon Cul, C’est du Tofu ? Records in the early tenies and recorded with them two Lps as Mr Marcaille and a Maxi-Lp with Amour, his arty free-punk side-project with Mr Verdun.

The ambiance reached a peak with King Automatic and his tasty mixture of garage, 50’s and exotica sound - a huge pleasure to check his show again after the ones he played at La Cerise* and in some other places a few days before. Maybe a bit tired with the standing-alone format, students and curious people disappeared after that and left the place to an euphoric crew of drunk pirates and frenzied rockers, all sticking together, and some falling in love too... Yeah, the legendary Reverend Beatman and Bob Log III were closing that delightful One-Man-Band battle on a highly festive way, as well as the Absürd festival was, the next day on the Maloya catamaran* . The year had been starting off well.

Rock à la Buse Festival - from the 07th to the 14th of March 2020 - Le Zinc, Le Palaxa...
Rock à la Buse Festival - Du 07 au 14 Mars 2020 - Le Zinc, Le Palaxa...

A week after the Absûrd fest, the French sanitory situation was turning into a messy disaster, a few cases were now locally reported and some local freaky informations announced that only 35 paltry beds, dedicated to the future resuscitations, were active on our far-away-from-any-help 750k inhabitants’ island.
The call for the Bracco’s live session x at the Zinc pub in St Leu went stronger than fear, though. After all, the virus wasn't that much around, was it ? The Parisian noisy dark punk duo was opening, with the local Kilkil synth-punkers, the 2020 edition of the Rock à la Buse festival x, which extensive program appeared once again pretty appealing : the American blues/garage punkers Prettiest Eyes from Castle Face Records - with the hopeful idea that thee Oh Sees, or even better, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, would play next year - the Belgium wacky riot’ girls in Cocaine Piss, the noisy experimental Le Singe Blanc from Metz, Bracco and a bunch of local bands (Pamplemousse, 608ZZ, SymptOhm, Papang), all going to play the following week-end at Le Palaxa, without forgetting the whole forecasted side-events of the festival in La Cité Des Arts (Art exhibitions, vinyl & comix flea market, the comix BDPI festival and, last but not least, Shut Up & Play the Music was going to sell out the remaining copies of its marvelous fanzine, thanx to Appollo, director of Le Cri du Margouillat).

The closer the festive week-end was getting, the more jeopardized it seemed to be. After many decisions, dithering and contradictions of the local authorities, the festival finally happened on a restrictive mode. As you might have guessed with the splashy headline of this review, I was already out of the play. A sportive mid-30’s colleague of mine, who had just come back from the mainland, was indeed spitting his blood in a hospital room, a few others were encountering serious headaches... The reading of the popularized Why You Must Act Now x, a deep analysis based on Co-vid world’s data and written by the coronavirus influencer Tomas Pueyo, had finished to convince me that a national confinement was the only solution if the country wanted to slow down the spreading of the virus, to give time to scientists to understand it, to reduce the pressure on hospitals and to preserve its seniors and weakened people.
