He kicks the drums in the Aquitaine combos Wild Zéros and Holeshots x, plays the bass for the Heartbeeps, and accompanies Perpignan-based Lord Diabolik on his tour. Here’s Tonton Jouv's new Selection, a collection of his reviews from the last two months.
François Jouvenaux nous vient de Mont-de-Marsan, dans les Landes. Il officie derrière les fûts au sein de combos aquitains tels que les Wild Zéros, les Holeshots x, joue de la basse avec les Heartbeeps, et accompagne le perpignanais Lord Diabolik sur ses tournées. Voici la nouvelle Sélection de Tonton Jouv, regroupant ses chroniques des deux derniers mois (février/mars 2025).
HUMAN TOYS - At The Poor Cow Lp - TOPSY TURVY Records - 2025 X
The 13 tracks were home-made and recorded by Jon Adam Von Zelowitz, kind of a Rémy Bricka who would have signed in for punk, while his ''Poupée Mécanique'' provides suave, slightly mad vocals, with some theremin's flourishes that Edward Sussman wouldn't have disowned. It includes revisited versions of Generation Shit and Go Go Alco from the 7inch previously released by Outro Rds x in 2024, and no less than 3 singular covers: Lost In The Jungle by Texan Bob Center, When You Find Out by Peter Case of the Plimsouls/Nerves, and the legendary, iconic I'm Sick Of You, that used to be the result of a close collaboration between Iggy Pop and James Williamson in the 70s. Human Zoo, Breakin' The Law and Dirty Lips dust off our records' collection, Yesterday Is Gone and Poor Cow are two hits, Emma Peel Explosion and Devil's Night are both explosive. We inevitably think about the Ramones, the Spits, the Groovie Ghoulies... A beautiful opus, mastered by Mathieu Berthet.
Our two globetrotters also preach everything we love to the four corners of the world. Thus, the punchy, colorful cover by Kame, drawn in the spirit of the 1st Lp Spin To Win, recalls their happy time in Tokyo at Fifi's Japanese underground bar (former member of American Soul Spiders, Teengenerate, Firestarter, currently performing in the Tweezers). Everything is gathered to have a Good Trip with Human Toys!
Nos deux saltimbanques gotho-punk de Human Toys s’en donnent à cœur joie dans cette aventure sonore alternative, rebelle, r’n'roll et sans pastiche. Ils signent ici leur 2eme album, At the Poor Cow sur Topsy Turvy Rds, sous-division de Soundflat Rds. Nos Ditton 44 ronronnent, et on adore ça autant qu’un Dry Martini, un Eyeball Cocktail ou une bonne pinte de blonde accoudé au comptoir.

BELLA AND THE BIZARRE - S/t Lp - IN THE RED Records - 2024 X
A bewitching band ? For sure, as the baby rockers of Bella and The Bizarre could haunt our souls as well as propel us into a rock'n'roll levitation session !
The band is also a quintessential Berliner band, as it features the spicy vocals of Amabelle - one of the King Khan's daughters, key musician of the local scene for thirty years - and that characteristic, solid mixture of explosive, well-digested soul, punk rock and 60s garage soundings we used to hear in the Berlin underground basements. The beautiful Splatter Blue Lp, released on In The Red Rds in 2024, looks like the perfect precursor to the fireworks that Bella Khan and her Bizarres have recorded here.
Envoûtants ! Les bébés rockers de Bella and The Bizarre pourrait bien hanter nos âmes ou nous propulser dans une belle séance de lévitation rock’n’roll. Groupe berlinois par excellence, on y croise ces sonorités soul caractéristiques, explosives, et basée sur du punk rock et du garage 60s solides et bien digérés, ainsi que le chant épicé d'Amabelle, une des filles de King Khan. Le Splatter Blue de la belle galette, sortie sur In The Red Rds en 2024, préfigure à merveille le véritable feu d’artifice qu’ont gravé ici Bella Khan et ses Bizarres.
PATROL - S/t Ep - DRUNKEN SAILOR Records - 2024 X
Patrol comes from Barcelona, but it also features members of les Lullies x - Roméo on the guitar and Manu hammering out his Evans and Remo. This awesome hard-punk combo should please any rockers in love with rock'n'roll, glam, punk, pop or early heavy-metal (Motörhead, Black Sabbath...). It makes our ears bleed, the guitars screech, the rhythm section is ultra rigourous, everything seems to be shaped by bulldozers and steamrollers. Darkroom, disco ball, weeds and brawling all together are guaranteed.
The Ep was released by Drunken Sailor Rds, the English label that has been thrilling our eardrums since 2010 (Pack Rat, Bloostains, the Unknowns x, Split System x, Stiff Richards x, Chain Whip, Liquids...). The cover sleeve looks old-fashioned, with a screen-printed style and a thick cardboard, with a photocopied insert. Also worthy of note is the close collaboration of Maxime Smadja, who recorded (and collaborated on) these murderous blasts to perfection - the walls of the Château Vergogne studio in PariSsse still remember them. Very classy!
Ils sont de Barcelone, avec des membres des Lullies x - Roméo à la gratte et Manu qui martèle Evans et Remo. Patrol, c'est du bon gros hard punk qui devrait plaire, ça sonne rock, ça sonne glam, ça sonne punk, ça sonne pop, ça sonne un poil heavy à la Motörhead (et Black Sabbath, ndOtJ !), ça saigne, les guitares crissent, la section rythmique est ultra béton, tout ça en mode bulldozer, un véritable rouleau compresseur, j’vous dis. Ambiance chambre noire et boule à facette, spliff et baigne garantie.
Le Ep est sorti chez Drunken Sailor Rds, le label anglais qui nous fait vibrer les tympans depuis 2010 (Pack Rat, Bloostains, the Unknowns x, Split System x, Stiff Richards x, Chain Whip, Liquids...). La pochette est à l’ancienne, style sérigraphiée, carton épais, avec insert passé à la photocop. À noter aussi l'étroite collaboration de Maxime Smadja, qui a capté (et collaboré) à merveille ces déflagrations assassines - les murs du studio Château Vergogne à PariSsse s’en souviennent encore. Très classe !
BART & THE BRATS / JACKET BURNER - Good Cop/Bad Cop Split-Ep - GOODBYE BOOZY Records - 2025 X
Beware, devastating music for teenage and young adult wankers ! Bart & The Brats x dispute this split-Ep with the New Mexican Jacket Burner x, and neither of the two guys is into arty frills: this is concise punk rock, keeping the flame of the 70s and 80s alive in 2025, and that's fine, even if the multi-instrumentalist side doesn't have the same flavor as a good old band (a matter of choice).
Bart throws down his usual recipe, with tracks that are crossbreeds of all his previous bands - we recognize his doggy paw from the very first riffs, croquettes and Hill's Pet pâté in addition - and the result is a minimalist, effective punk rock, recorded during another studio session at Lo Spider's Swampland. A new album is due out by the end of April on Sweet time Rds.
Jacket Burner, with his Cuir x look, is a real eye-opener. An first Ep entitled Tonite x was recently released on the same Italian label, Goodbye Boozy Rds, as well as an home-made debut album in 2024, Terminal Depression. Even if he's slightly more metronomic than Bart & the Brats (probably due to the drum machine), Jacket Burner sounds so much like his French counterpart! So, to make sure you're listening to the right protagonists, please refer to the titles of both on the back of the sleeve, because, whether it be intentional or not - typo or joke ? -, there are two A-sides on this 7inch.
Black stamps on white labels and cheapo sleeves fully reveal the DIY, low-budget spirit in the Rip Off and Frantic City Rds vein. There's also a collector's limited edition, with a negative photo.
Attention, musique dévastatrice pour adulescents et jeunes branleurs! Bart And The Brats x dispute ce nouveau split-Ep avec le new-mexicain Jacket Burner x, et aucun des deux ne fait dans la fioriture à 3 balles : c’est du punk rock concis, qui entretient en 2025 la flamme des 70s et des 80s, et c’est très bien ainsi, même si le côté multi-instrumentiste n’a pas la même saveur qu’un bon vieux groupe des familles (question de choix).
Bart balance sa recette habituelle, avec des morceaux aux croisements de tous ses groupes - on reconnaît sa papatte dès les premiers riffs, croquettes et Canigou en plus. Du Punk rock minimaliste et efficace, enregistré lors d’une énième session studio chez Lo Spider, et un nouvel alboom à venir d’ici fin avril sur Sweet time Rds.
Découverte et vif intérêt pour Jacket Burner avec un look façon Cuir x, un Ep intitulé Tonite x sorti récemment sur le même label italien Goodbye Boozy Rds et un album home-made orbite 2024, Terminal Depression, qui me monte la sève du ''figuerol'' (j’invente). Légèrement plus métronomique (sûrement lié à la boîte à rythme), Jacket Burner ressemble pourtant à si méprendre à son homologue français ! D’ailleurs pour être sûr que vous écoutez les bons protagonistes, referez vous aux titres de l’un et de l’autre, car, voulu ou non, coquille ou blagounette, il y a deux faces A sur ce 45tours .
Tampons noirs sur labels blancs et pochette cheapos révèlent pleinement l’état d’esprit DIY, genre petit budget pour grands bonhommes, Rip Off et Frantic City Rds en référence. Il existe une version collector, tirage limité, pochette en négatif.
