But don't fall asleep on your Minneapolis Uranium Club x or Gee Tee x albums just yet! Because a new generation of young garage/synth-punk bands is already emerging, and while they're embracing the genre with the same inventiveness, spontaneity, DIY ethic (self-production, cassette labels, international networking, etc.) ) and the same cool cretinism as their elders from the previous decade, they also know how to breathe new life into it. With Autobahns x, Billiam x, Busted Head Racket x... and the myriad of cassette micro-labels lying in wait (Under Heat, Painscale, Warttmann, Idiotape Records...), the future seems assured! We applaud the curiosity of more established labels (Goodbye Boozy, Legless, Under the Gun... and Sweet Time Records in this case) who dare to bring an increased visibility to this nascent microcosm by releasing their first vinyl records.
The Shitdels... The name evoked a poor parody of 60s garage bands (the Standels, the Rondels, the Shadels...), while the Ep title - Louder Than Shit was rather dubious crude humor. Curiosity is the mother of all virtues, because what we ultimately discover is a veritable hit machine, a profusion of magnificent garage-punk melodies drowned in a broth of distorsions, reverb and dirty sounds. For instance, the mangled version of the Drifters' 1959 calypso song There Goes my Baby sounds like the King Khan & BBQ Show pilled through a lo-fi mill, on a Retail Simps' way x. Yeah, that's pretty much what the Shitdels are all about : blissful contentment and joyful relief, and the illustration of the throne on the back of the cover reminds us of this.
We had given up waiting for it. It makes us wonder whether some records are deliberately held up by a few acrimonious postal workers, or whether they enjoy traveling ten times around the world, lost in the hold, before reaching their destination... So it was a divine surprise when Added Dimensions' first single, Time Suck/Hellbent, finally arrived here! And we're not disappointed by the (very long) journey.
There are five rockers coming from Nantes, they play raw, devil-may-care rock, and so they decided to call themselves NC Five. Simple as that.
It's easy to get carried away by these five tracks sung in French, homemade and gently immature. A “Frenchy but Shitty” (their own words), minimalist garage punk in the pure style of the No Talents, Supercharger, or Rip Offs (whose timeless She Said Yeah they cover). On a different range, there's a nod to La Souris Déglinguée (“Est ce que tu le sais, pourquoi je te hais” on the track... Haine. Food for thoughts when discussing their influences.
And speaking about references, the female singer also runs Fish & Cheap Records, a young label that releases a growing number of limited-edition 7inches that are as unexpected as they are essential: reissues of Brit’punk (the Tinopeners), garage revival (Terminal) and power pop (Jet!) obscure bands, live recordings by a survivor of the 1980s (M.O.T.O., which tour manager Robert Kiss'n'Run kindly lent us for a memorable concert at l’Excalibur back in 2008), the return of some activists from the 2000s garage-punk wave (the pop-wave of the Retrospects, with what seems to be a White Wires member in it, and the glam-punk of Tuxedo Cats, a logical follow-up to Apache and Though Shits), all while keeping a close eye on the newcomers of the Aussi scene (the Bugg Music demo tape, originally released on Warttmann Records, the label of Ishka Edmeades, the brilliant singer/guitarist behind TV Repairmann x, Gee Tee x, Satanic Togas x...). Welcome to this new label !
TUXEDO CATS - Fake Punk Ep - NEW YORK PUNK Records - 2024 X
The last meow of this selection goes to the magnificent boovver boys in Tuxedo Cats! The two singles released on Fish & Cheap Records (Frenchin’/Wait & See, see above) hooked us so much that we immediately set our sights on the New York gang’s entire discography (we admittedly are a bit late to the party, but better late than never).
Their two Eps, Out The Bag (Reminder Records, 2022) and Fake Punk (self-produced, 2024), will delight any fans of street rock’n’roll, glam rock, and hard punk à la Giuda x and Shandy. Incidentally, we applaud the return to favor of this lively Internationale of bootboys and sharpies (Ingrates x, Boss x, Brower x, Street Sweeper x, Videoflip x, Patrol x...). All very good. Meow!
Miaou !
