Turning Round On The Turntable : BloodShot Bill, Televisionaries, Bambies, Cuir

BLOODSHOT BILL - HangTen With Bloodshot Bill Vol I Ep - Hi-Tide Recordings - 2019 x

It seems pretty clear that another huge wave of One-man-bands’ nuggets is going to splash the rock’n’roll planet after this perfect-for-composing Quarantine episode. Yeah, Squoodge, Norton, Kizmiaz, Slovenly, Hog Maw, Ghost Highway Records, etc, get ready for a new fascinating round !
The One-man-band from Montreal, Bloodshot Bill x, which numerous singles have been released on most of those labels for the last 20 years, didn’t wait those sad events to record another wild bunch of marvelous rock’n’roll tunes: a new Lp, Get Loose Or Get Lost, full of raw 50’s tunes, will be out very soon on Goner Records, and, lately last year, this first Extended-Play 45 of the HangTen Series was released by Hi-Tide Recordings x in 2019.
On this one, Bloodshot Bill left aside his voice, which usually drifted, with such an ease, between Elvis-like tones and 60’s teenagers’ shoutings, to give 4 instrumental songs mixing primitive garage beats and a fairly welcome double guitar play - the highly-recognizable low tones of his 50’s riffs backing-up some well-groomed surf music piercing solos.
On the A-side, the jovial Peeling x, a killer hit with a Shadows/early-Trashmen sound, could easily have featured on the soundtrack of a shark attack B-movie, while the same recipe was used on Shark Tank, which remained, though, a bit less catchy. On the other side, Another Wave had a little taste of some King Khan & the BBQ songs - not a huge surprise regarding the collaboration between Bloodshot Bill and his  two Canadian fellows Mark Sultan (the Ding-Dongs) and King Khan (the Tandoori Knights) in the early 2010’s. The loungy, almost jazzy, song Scattered Peaks closed up this EP with a very fresh and cool note.
A really tasty surfing atmosphere surrounded the whole thing, whether it be in the sound, in the name of the songs, in the drawing on the front cover and in the choice of the uprising label for the release, Hi-Tide Recordings, from New Jersey, which seemed deeply involved into surf music and other tiki or exotica stuff.

TELEVISIONARIES - Rama-A Lam-A Ep - Hi-Tide Recordings - 2019 x

Rochester, New York State, 200 thousands inhabitants, the Kodak Tower, a few beaches alongside the Ontario Lake, but definitely not a place for any longboard’s sessions ! Though, the three young guys playing in Televisionaries seems to be the new Kings Of the Surf with this 4-songs EP : 60’s teenagers’ looks, the cool retro sound mainly based on instrumental surf music and Dick Dale-like characteristic onomatopoeias and shoutings (check the high energy songs Bad News and Achoo!), the incursions into garage and R&B beats (Tokyo Swing with its I Love You Baby Troggs sounding riff), the 50’s rock’n’roll touch (Ram-A Lam-A, which sounds a bit like a powered-up version of the Bill Haley’s Rock Around The Clock), the sepia treatement of the vintage looking-like front picture...
It didn’t take long, of course, before they’ve become the new protégés of Hi-Tide Recordings x and get approached by Bloodshot Bill - Montreal isn’t that far. A collaboration between the two bands that ended up with another great EP, Spit On My Rubber, released last month by the same label.
The medium sized city of Rochester also seems to have a pretty nice vivid rock scene: Harmonica Levinski (mambo/psyche and such a funny name !), Awful Kanaful (glamy soul 70’s rock’n’roll), Slik Nik & th’Tex Playboys (50’s folk/blues), the Fox Sisters (60’s R&B/soul, with which Televisionaries shared a 7inch))… For sure, a place to visit some day. Keep on surfing, guys !

BAMBIES - Red Guitar Sp - RETA Records - 2019 x

Same area, but a few miles down the St Laurent’s River and we’re back to Montreal. This time, with the band Bambies. This trio also knows what rock’n’roll means and the Canadian guys give us a beautiful lesson of powerpop music !
Bambies’ sound seems to come straight from the mid-noughties . After a worthy DIY demo tape, they recorded late last year two very-well-produced songs standing on this very first single.
Red Guitar is a pure jewel of garage punk and melodic hxc - fast tempo and devastating guitar riffs, thinking about the Manikins, the Kidnappers and, of course, the Marked Men ; by the way, the voice of the singer is really similar to the one of Mark Ryan. The tempo slows down on the B-side : Black Hands is an awesome powerful pop tune that sounds like the Rich Crook’s band Lover!.
Reta Records x - we already talked about this label when it released the brilliant Sorels’ single back in 2019 - keeps on digging the Canadian area and has found there a really tasty band !

Tabarnak !

CUIR - Single Demo - Lp - OffSide Records - 2020 x

Lorient, Brittany, France. Same kind of sea-side cities as Le Havre and Saint Nazaire : fully erased by bombings during WW2 (Lorient, such a lucky town, was chosen to be a German U-boats’ base), it quickly became in the 60’s a newly rising city for middle-class workers, labors and sailors : famous football team and club, BzH vivid pubs, tough'n'sweet ways of living…). The kind of place of which inhabitants can easily be proud, to the point of getting tattoos of the city’s flag on one’s own tummy.
Some kind of pride to be born somewhere ? Whatever... It seems to be the only transgression that the guy in Cuir made to his rebel without a cause look, attitude and state of mind: leather perfecto, sado-masochistic pink hood, LIVE and RIP tattooed on the phalanges, can of 8°6 beer in one hand, weeds and speed in the pockets, etc... He’s  good at describing his no-future drunkards’ stories and other Bukowskian hanging-arounds, and knows how to play a raw solo synthetic punk sound (drum machine tempo, sharp guitar riffs, efficient punk melodies, dark lyrics, at the crossroad of Metal Urbain, Paris Violence and Condor). And on the top of that, his aggressive voice ecchoes the one of the singer in Peter And the Test Tube Babies.
The Breton musician, in his mid-thirties, isn’t any novice of course. He used to play in two significant bands, Sordid Ship (dark melodic hxc, thinking about La Vase/ La Dérive des Incontinents) and Coupe-Gorge (Oi/hxc from the vibrant Brest’s punk scene). He also runs Forty Tapes Records x, a label that released last year the two demo tapes of Cuir (Demo Demo Demo et Single Single) featuring the 9 songs that finally lay on this vinyl LP. Thanx to Offside Records x for this awaited re-release and beautiful production ! And yes, I’ll catch, without a doubt, this One-man-band at Le Galion pub during my next trip to Brittany.

Gigs' Reviews : Maloya Boat (Reverend Beat-Man + Bob Log III - March 2020)

REVEREND BEAT-MAN + BOB LOG III
01/03/2020 - Maloya Boat - Saint Paul's Bay, La Réunion

A first bacteriological attack to squash Western standards and economies  ? The primitive hostility of the microscopic worlds, as an answer to the human pressure on nature? A banal human mistake in a secured laboratory ? Or, more basically, an unhappy confluence of natural events ? That amazing cocktail of paranoid feelings, junk eco explanation and Cartesian reaction followed the initial trauma and the morbide jubilation - I obviously knew such things would happen some days. It wasn’t an easy thing to give a sense to all that shit, indeed, as nonsense had been everywhere in this world for centuries. Darwinism adaptation and introduction of new routines in our daily lives seemed to be, so far, the only response to the absurdity of the situation.

Let’s come back to a far more interesting subject, a topic also talking about absurdity, but in such a good way : that late-February delightful Absürd x festival !
The guy in Mr Occhio, a local garage one-man-band, decided a few months ago to invite the best of the best one-man-bands he used to tour with when he was living in Italy : Bob Log III, Reverend Beat-Man, King Automatic and Mr Marcaille. Idyllic reunion on Reunion Island ! They all played the Kabardock place on the 29th of February, and, the next day, the two international headliners boarded the Maloya catamaran for an open sea crazy gig & sunset time !
Flat sea, sunny sky and very hot Northern breeze. The quite numerous local buccaneers, who didn’t seem to be great sailors though, get quickly comfortable, threw away shirts and shoes, took over the bar and started partying during a 3-hours’ rock’n’roll show.

Reverend Beat-Man x opened the party.
In the 90’s, he used to play in Lightning Beat-Man, a one-man-band dedicated to catchers’ games and in the Monsters. After a near-death experience, he met God, but declined Its invitation to Heaven and choose to come back to sing his own Beat-Man Way to the entire world - his love for rock’n’roll, alcohol, cigarettes, weeds and sexy gogo-dancers’ girls. He has performed as the Reverend, for the 20 following years, an explosive mixture of haunting blues, dirty 50’s beat, swampy garage punk, with sometimes some Swiss and Balkanian exotica in his yodeling guitar or some tasty modern Italian touch when he plays with Izobel Garcia.

The folkloric preacher guy released many Lps on his own label Voodoo Rhythm, some awesome nuggets on Squoodge Records, booked great tours and played awesome wild parties.
I finally managed to check him in the early noughties on a Loud Mufflers festival, he was sharing the stage with King Khan & the Shrines and Fifty Foot Combo. A blast ! It has ever been a pleasure to see his live shows afterwards, but a question has ever remained : is he a real or a fake Reverend ?

He seems to be a true one yet : the Swiss area (German Switzerland) where he came from, his dress code, his trashy blues songs dealing with Jesus, the perverse poses with girls on his records - the pastor’s attitude of Robert Mitchum in the Night of the Hunter isn’t really far -, or, his gospels and passionate sermons. His cavernous, viril voice too, that perfectly fits with the idea of what a precher is. And, last but not least, his moving fidelity to his family – I might be wrong on this last point of course, but I already met a few sexy girls who asked some day the Reverend to marry her. Such a heavy cross to carry from time to time indeed…

Bob Log III x, an Aussie one-man-band, also seemed to have a pretty nice female fan-club and has the thing to make girls dance for him ! Was it the kitsch cannonball glitter costume or the homemade motorcycle elmet with the phone set plugged on it ? The super-dancing rhythm or the slide guitar play of his songs, at the crossroad of some messy garage and dirty funky disco, with a fun touch of the Benny Hill Theme’s madness? Whatever ! The party became hot, the inflatable duck full of sparkling white wine swapped from one mouth to the other – the Covid-bullshit hadn’t arrived the island yet -, the local rockers danced with the catamaran Jolly Rodgers’ flag, the girls tried the famoius knees’ riding of the singer, the inflatable balloons flew everywhere or exploded under the musician’s feet, the boat was just a mess at the end….
Same thing as for Reverend Beat-Man: for the last twenty-five years, he has played an impressive bunch of wild shows, toured worldwide, recorded many vinyls on awesome labels (Sympathy For the Records Industry, Fat Possum, Corduroy…).

The Absürd Fest was a huge breath of pure freedom and rock’n’roll, I hope it won’t be the last one !
Greetings from my little golden jail with my beloved family. There’s a war, said our President lately. Which one ? I just don’t know, but it’s going to be kind of a shitty time. See you soon, if we’re not turned into some zombies.

For the Records IndustryFat PossumCorduroy…).
