Yeah, it was pretty obvious that those two bands were deeply in phase! They had the same dynamism, the same freshness, the same youth, the same enthusiasm and the same smiles. They also showed many similarities in their rock'n'roll attitude, elegantly carrying their feminine touch and a nice DIY ethic, but also in their musical refined tastes and in their background through the rock counter-culture. While listening to their recordings, the same kind of sonic explosion and heady melodies caught our ears, and similar themes tackled the poignant, but not headstrong, little stories of their daily life. Moreover, this obvious symbiosis between the two bands, Alvilda x and Pogy & les Kéfars x, was the driving force of an awesome renewal of the French power-pop scene.
The first meeting between the four rude girls of the Parisian nights and the three new rockers of l’Estrangin had taken place around Bordeaux during the autumn 2021. That first musical confrontation had definitively established the compatibility of mood, sound and attitude between them, and had laid the basis of a promising friendship, since the meeting led eight months later to a 10-dates French-Spanish tour, on which the two bands were going to express, side by side, all their potential. The tour was opening with that gig at Le Klub - a small Parisian club, kind of a shortened version of La Mécanique Ondulatoire, with a beautiful vaulted cellar. Last but not least, the Suttles x, a combo of veterans of the Parisian garage/punk scene of the last twenty years, were also scheduled !
Ouais, c'était une évidence. Les deux groupes étaient profondément en phase ! On leur trouvait un même dynamisme, une même fraîcheur, une même jeunesse, un même enthousiasme et les mêmes sourires. Ils affichaient aussi de nombreuse similitudes dans leur attitude rock'n'roll, élégamment conjuguée au féminin et porteuse d'une éthique joliment DIY, mais aussi dans leur goûts musicaux, pointus, et dans leur parcours à travers le milieu de la contre-culture rock. Enfin, à l'écoute de leurs enregistrements, les mêmes genres de déflagration sonique, de mélodies entêtantes, de thématiques abordées dans leurs petites histoires du quotidien, poignantes mais sans prise de tête, nous accrochaient les oreilles. La symbiose entre ces deux groupes, Alvilda et Pogy & les Kéfars, me paraissait être l'élément moteur d'une scène power-pop française en pleine refloraison.
La première rencontre entre les quatre 'rude girls' des nuits parisiennes et le trio de rockeurs/rockeuse de l'Estrangin avait eu lieu du côté de Bordeaux à l'automne 2021. Un premier affrontement musical, qui semblait avoir définitivement assis cette compatibilité d'humeur, de son, d'attitude, et posé les base d'une amitié prometteuse, puisque que la rencontre avait débouché huit mois plus tard sur une tournée franco-espagnole d'une dizaine de dates, sur laquelle les deux groupes allaient exprimer côte à côte tout leur potentiel. Leur tournée s'ouvrait donc par ce concert au Klub, une petite boîte parisienne, avec une belle cave voûtée dans le style de La Mécanique Ondulatoire, mais en version raccourcie. Et cerise sur le gâteau, the Suttles, combo regroupant des vétérans des scène garage/punk parisiennes des vingt dernières années, étaient aussi de la partie !
The date fitted rather well with my spring trip to the French mainland. I had decided to skip this time the visit to my in-laws in Nancy and to offer myself a full week of nihilisto-punk solitary wandering mixed with some festive reunions with my buddies. A week that was going to be marked by the sign of the hedonistic pleasure...
So, immense pleasure to attend - finally! - the live performances of these three bands. Pleasure also to meet again some colorful characters, whose I met about fifteen years earlier during my parenthesis in Reims. They were still around in any Parisian good rock'n'roll plans: the lively Eve from Operation S (and temp in Warum Joe); the affable and smiling Manu from Anteenagers; the always cool and hilarious Fred Périph, professionally in freewheel since he had obtained his internal agrégation... And above all, my buddy Lool from Juvisy - a 25 years long friendship - that I hadn't been able to see again since my trip to Toulouse four years earlier.
La date collait plutôt bien avec ma virée métropolitaine. J'avais fait ce coup-ci l'impasse sur la visite à ma belle-famille à Nancy pour m'offrir une semaine complète de vadrouille solitaire nihilisto-punk et de retrouvailles festives avec les potes. Une semaine qui s'annonçait sous le signe du plaisir hédoniste...
Immense plaisir donc d'assister - enfin! - aux prestations 'live' de ces trois groupes. Plaisir également de recroiser quelques personnages hauts en couleur, rencontrés une quinzaine d'années plus tôt lors de ma parenthèse rémoise, et encore présents dans les bons plans rock'n'roll: la toujours fringante Eve d'Opération S (et actuellement intérimaire dans Warum Joe); l'affable et souriant Manu d'Anteenagers; le toujours cool et hilare Fred Périph, en roue libre professionnelle depuis qu'il avait décroché son agrégation interne... Et surtout, mon pote Lool de Juvisy - une amitié indéfectible de 25 ans - que je n'avais pu revoir depuis ma virée toulousaine quatre ans plus tôt.
The only small disappointment of the party was finally the rather short format of the three sets. A question of a very tight timing, since an electro-LGBT session was planned for the second part of the evening at the same place. At 10pm, the hostilities ended up. Some of my acquaintances were moving to the Holy Holster pub, some others at the Tiki. Should we follow them, with the clear danger of a 'helmeted' and terribly difficult tomorrow? Or listen to the voice of the reason and ensure the following day, with the project to steer the road towards Valence for the second evening of the Bomb Your Brain Fuzztival (featuring the Scaners and the Sex Organs)? Cornelian choice... We finally went back to Juvisy, where the absinthe tasting decided for me the turn of the events : the following day was certainly going to be 'helmeted', not very glorious and without any gigs, but with the delicious company of one of my best buddies.
Hugh ! Am I talking once again about my fascinating life ? Ok, back to the music ! One only last thing, by the way : if you ever stop someday at Juvisy, check there the record shop Discophenia. A nice discovery !
La seule petite déception de la soirée fut finalement le format assez court des trois sets. Une question de 'timing' très serré, puisqu'une session électro-LGBT était prévue en seconde partie de soirée dans le même lieu. 22h sonna donc la fin des hostilités. Certains poursuivirent au Holy Holster, d'autres au Tiki. Les y suivre avec le danger d'un lendemain 'casqué' et terriblement difficile ? Ou écouter la voix de la raison, et assurer la journée suivante, avec le projet de tracer la route vers Valence pour la seconde soirée du Fuzztival Bomb Your Brain (avec the Scaners et the Sex Organs)? Choix cornélien... On se rapatria finalement sur Juvisy, où la dégustation poussée d'absinthe décida de la tournure des événements. La journée suivante allait certes être 'casquée', peu glorieuse et sans concert, mais en compagnie délicieuse d'un de mes meilleurs potes. Bon je raconte encore ma vie, une fois de plus... Au passage quand même, si jamais vous passez par Juvisy, faites un saut chez le disquaire Discophenia. Une belle découverte !
What else could we say about those three bands - Alvilda x, Pogy & les Kéfars x and the Suttles x - that had not already been mentioned the year before in the columns of Shut Up & Play The Music ? For the last year, they had continued their nice little way in the French punk scene. The Suttles had released an excellent second album, Stories, on Topsy Turvy/Soundflat Records, and a third one was already in the air. The Parisian and Marseille-based bands had just released for their common tour a split-Cs gathering most of the tracks of the Négatif Ep (soon to be re-issued on Alien Snatch Records) and the Dans Ton Rétro Lp, on a beautiful, pastel-blue tape that my daughter has since shamelessly stolen from me - this is undoubtedly one of the consequences of the 80's 'revival' brought by the Stranger Things series to the teenagers.
Last but not least, the whole bunch was soon going to feature on the Nuit Blanche Lp, each one with an unreleased track. The release of this essential, already mythical compilation, gathering all the French bands that had made us vibrate for a few years, was planned for autumn 2022 on Lollipop Records. We would certainly talk about it again.
Que dire de plus sur ces trois groupes, Alvilda, Pogy & les Kéfars et the Suttles, qui n'avait déjà été évoqué l'année précédente dans les colonnes de Shut Up & Play The Music ? Depuis un an, ils avaient poursuivi leur petit bonhomme de chemin dans le milieu du punk français. The Suttles venaient ainsi de sortir un excellent second Lp, Stories, chez Topsy Turvy/Soundflat Records, et un troisième était en préparation. Les parisiennes et les marseillais avaient quant à eux édité pour leur tournée commune une split-K7 regroupant une partie des titres du Ep Négatif (bientôt ré-édité chez Alien Snatch Records) et du Lp Dans Ton Rétro. Une jolie K7 bleue pastel que ma fille m'a depuis éhontément volée - voilà une des conséquences du 'revival' 80's apporté par la série Stranger Things auprès de la jeunesse adolescente.
Dernière chose, enfin. Tout ce beau petit monde allait bientôt se retrouver, avec chacun un titre inédit, sur le Lp Nuit Blanche, regroupant l'ensemble des groupes français qui nous faisaient vibrer depuis déjà quelques années. La sortie était prévue pour l'automne 2022 sur Lollipop Records. Une compilation indispensable, et déjà mythique, dont on allait assurément reparler.
