JACK OF HEART - Be Yer Queen/ Bresley Psalm Sp - PROFÊT Records - 2024 X
Profêt Records, the label led by Piero Ilov, is coming back after an absence of ten years or more. It looks like a resurrection. The Perpignan-based structure used to be, along with its Catalan alter-ego Nasty Product, a major contributor to the covering of the garage-punk scene in Perpignan during the early 2000s (the Mighty Go-Go Players, les Bellas, the Fatals...). In the midst of this awesome musical underground, Piero Ilov also launched Jack Of Heart, a band that got us excited from its very first track - the biting, swampy My Love In Vain.
From that point on, the band's story quickly joined the ones of the main combos from the DIY Occitan microcosm of the Perpignan-Toulouse-Bordeaux axis (La Grande Triple Entende du Sud-Ouest, could we have called it, to paraphrase the garage movement active in the east of France at the same time (La Grande Triple Alliance de l'Est)): just like les Liminanas x, JC Satan or Destination Lonely x at the same time, Jack Of Heart wrote one of the finest pages of French rock and followed a relatively similar career.
First, a few singles released on renowned international labels - here, Rob's House, Perpetrator, Slovenly Records, etc... (later compiled on the Only Seven Inches For Your Girlfriend? Lp released by Teenage Menopause Records in 2011). Then came the rising years, thanks to the activism and support of prestigious labels, such as Born Bad Records for Jack Of Heart (with the released of two albums - Jack Of Heart in 2009 and In Your Mouth in 2011 - and the organisation of some fine French tours). Finally, the international recognition and concerts through the North American continent. Piero Ilov/ Jack Of Heart's partnership with the Canadian Jeff Clarke x of the Demon's Claws seems to date from this period. In the mid-2010s, the garage-psych and flower-punk tide began to vanish, forcing the Perpignan band to have an extended break.
Last spring, we were delighted to discover that Jack Of Heart was scheduled to play at the Goner Records' GonerFest 2023, and that the singer-guitarist was preparing for the event with a series of concerts on some of France's finest stages. As the Gonerfest 2023 was dedicated to the memory of King Louie Bankston (eternal love for the Royal Pendletons!), Jack Of Heart composed for the occasion the Breslev Psalm's tune, a highly personal version of King Louie & the Loose Diamonds' Burning Sands. It was a soaring, soulful cover that deliciously flirts with some exotic garage track of Andre Williams. This magnificent tribute can be found on the B-side of this single, self-released on Profêt Records, while the A-side features the track Be Yer Queen, which seems to revive the creeping, raw, almost Cramps-ian garage of the band's early days. Jack Of Heart's story is far from being over.
Cela ressemble bien à une résurrection. Profêt Records annonce son grand retour après plus de dix années d'absence. Le label perpignanais, piloté par Piero Ilov, contribua largement, en compagnie de son alter-ego catalan Nasty Product, à défricher toute la scène garage-punk du Perpignan du début des années 2000 (the Mighty Go-Go Players, les Bellas, the Fatals...). Au milieu de ce marigot musical sublime, il lança parallèlement Jack Of Heart, un groupe qui nous enthousiasma dès son premier morceau - le très mordant et marécageux My Love In Vain.
Dès lors, l'histoire du groupe allait rapidement rejoindre celle des principaux combos du microcosme DIY occitan de l'axe Perpignan-Toulouse-Bordeaux (la Grande Triple Entende du Sud-Ouest, aurait-on pu l'appeler, pour paraphraser la mouvance garage active dans l'Est de la France à la même époque): ainsi, tout comme les Liminanas x, JC Satan ou Destination Lonely x au même moment, Jack Of Heart écrivit une des plus belles pages du rock français. Et tous eurent des parcours relativement similaires.
D'abord quelques 45 tours sortis sur des labels internationaux renommés - ici, Rob's House, Perpetrator, Slovenly Records, etc... (plus tard réunis sur la compilation Only Seven Inches For Your Girlfriend? parue chez Teenage Menopause Records en 2011). Puis une montée en puissance, grâce à l'activisme de prestigieux labels, avec à la clef, quelques belles tournées françaises (pour Jack Of Heart, ce fut Born Bad Records qui soutint le groupe et sortit ses deux albums (Jack Of Heart en 2009 et In Your Mouth en 2011). Enfin, l'acquisition d'une reconnaissance internationale et des concerts sur le continent Nord-américain. Le compagnonnage de Piero Ilov/ Jack Of Heart avec le canadien Jeff Clarke x des Demon's Claws semblait dater de cette époque. Le soufflet du garage-psyche et du flower-punk retomba pourtant au milieu des années 2010, poussant le groupe perpignanais à une pause prolongée.
Au printemps dernier, on découvrait avec plaisir que Jack Of Heart était programmé à l'affiche de l'édition 2023 du GonerFest du label Goner Records, et que le chanteur-guitariste préparait l'évènement ténnesséen avec une série de concerts sur quelques-unes des plus belles scènes françaises. Le Gonerfest 2023 étant cette année dédié à la mémoire du défunt King Louie Bankston (rhah, les Royal Pendletons !), Jack Of Heart composa pour l'occasion le morceau Breslev Psalm, une version très personnelle du Burning Sands de King Louie & the Loose Diamonds. Un reprise à la fois planante, habitée, et flirtant délicieusement avec le garage exotique d'un André Williams. On retrouve cet hommage magnifique sur la face B du présent 45 tours, auto-produit sur Profêt Records, tandis que la face A propose le morceau Be Yer Queen qui semble vouloir renouer avec le garage rampant, brut et quasi Cramps-ien des débuts du groupe. L'histoire de Jack Of Heart est loin d'être terminée.
THE MCCHARMLYS - Always Be (My Baby) / Tu Serás Mi Baby Sp - NU-TONE Recordings - 2023 X
The five rockers in the band the McCharmlys seem to be five mischievous young adults. They've taken up one of John Lennon's many malicious tricks - in a 1964 interview, the Beatles' leader gave sweet nicknames to his three bandmates (George Parasol, Ringo Stone and Paul... McCharmly) - and with the use of this 100% WASP-sounding band name, they seem to love poking fun at America's neo-conservative inconsistency (they all seem to come from the American-Hispanic minority).
But anyway... One thing's sure: the Californian McCharmlys have no shortage of charm! The singer's voice is terrific - reminiscent of the vocal intonations of Shannon Shaw, the lead singer of Shannon & the Clams. By the way, the band plays the same kind of 60's garage recipe, cooked with 50's pop and top-class rock'n'roll, and served up in its own Girls In The Garage sauce. Thus, the McCharmlys covers here the Ronettes' hit Be My Baby in a Spanish version - with castanets and baritone sax indeed - (Tu Serás Mi Baby) while they offer on the A-side a 'special DJ' single version of the magnificent Always Be (My Baby), that already featured on their first album (The McCharmlys) - a doo-wop tune that has absolutely nothing to envy the Platters' Only You hit.
The album and this single were both released in 2023 by Nu-Tone Recordings. The label is not a totally unknown structure around here, since it's the sub-division - dedicated to the various sub-genres of the 50s/60s revival sound - of the surf-music champions Hi-Tone Recordings (Televisionaries x, Bloodshot Bill x, the Surfrajettes x...). The New Jersey's label has just made a remarkable entry into the big leagues with some prestigious signings (Messer Chups, the 5,6,7,8's...). Let's finally note that the magical McCharmlys/Surfrajettes double act will be touring the US in March.
Les cinq rockeurs du groupe the McCharmlys ne seraient-ils pas de grands enfants facétieux (et facétieuse) ? Ils reprennent une des nombreuses espiègleries de John Lennon - dans une interview de 1964, le leader des Beatles avait affublé ses trois compères de doux surnoms (George Parasol, Ringo Stone et Paul... McCharmly) - et s'amusent à titiller l'inconsistance néo-conservatrice américaine en affichant ce nom de groupe à la consonance 100% WASP, eux qui semblent tous issus de la minorité américano-hispanique.
Quoiqu'il en soit, une chose est sûre : de charme, les californiens des McCharmlys n'en manquent pas ! La voix de la chanteuse est à tomber - on pense aux intonations vocales de Shannon Shaw, la chanteuse de Shannon & the Clams. Le groupe nous assène d'ailleurs le même genre de cuisine garage 60's mijotée à la pop-50's et au rock'n'roll top classe, dans sa sauce à la Girls In The Garage. Le groupe reprend ici le tube Be My Baby des Ronettes en version hispanisée - avec castagnettes et saxo baryton svp ! - (Tu Serás Mi Baby). Sur la face A, il offre une version single 'special deejay' du magnifique Always Be (My Baby), également présent sur leur premier album (The McCharmlys), un morceau doo-wop qui n'a absolument rien à envier au Only You de Platters.
Les sorties de l'album et de ce 45 tours ont été pilotés en 2023 par le label Nu-Tone Recordings. Une structure pas totalement inconnue par ici, puisqu'il s'agit de la sub-division, dédiée aux divers sous-genres du son revival 50's/60's, du champion de la surf-music Hi-Tone Recordings. La structure-mère, déjà croisée dans ces colonnes (Televisionaries x, Bloodshot Bill x, the Surfrajettes x...) vient de faire une entrée remarquée dans la cour des grands avec quelques signatures prestigieuses (Messer Chups, the 5,6,7,8's...). À noter que le doublet magique McCharmlys/ Surfrajettes sera en tournée américaine au mois de mars.

This month, we're definitely doing a John Lennon special, aren't we ? Once again, the reference is obvious ('Are you a mod or a rocker? I'm a mocker!')! But from now, we'll stop talking about those damned Beatles... A promise !
However, this story does give us food to think about the importance of choosing the right band name and the best record's front-cover... Two years ago, while exploring the distribution list of the Toulouse-based guy 'Varluche' - one of the best stock in France with newly released 60s garage and psychedelic records - we got intrigued by the name, the youth and the neat mods look of the Mocks. Their first three 7-inches, released in 2021/22 by the Spanish label Bickerton Records (Colour Collection x, Jack Cades x, Fleur...) immediately caught us. We logically discovered a nice mid-60s revival band, influenced by both the London beat of the British invasion (the Zombies, the Troggs, the Kinks...) and the wild R'n'B of the Pretty Things, all served up by classy compositions, and without any hassles. The Mocks, although originally from the Netherlands, did deserve their name.
While waiting for the band's debut album, due out in a few weeks' time on Wap Shoo Wap Records (the Dutch label has also released their fourth 7-inch), the Mocks have just recorded this fifth single. The high-energy Do You Want Me Too? on the A-side rivals the creeping cover - very Remains in the spirit - of the track Relax by the Mocks' old Belgian cousins from the 60s, the aptly-named the Cousins. The French garage-rockers from Strycknine Productions in Périgueux (who have been active for some fifteen years, releasing some excellent garage-punk records - Flying Over, Double Cheese, Gee Strings... ) and Pigmé Records in Valencia (a label linked to the Fuzz Your Brain festivals and thee Gunlocks, and previously featured in these columns with the records by la Découpe x and Holeshots x) have teamed up with Extremadura's Wild Cave Records (a label linked to Sweet Grooves Records/Shop, based in Cáceres). The Netherlands, France, Spain, the English roots... Long live the Europe of mod'n'roll!
Décidément, ce mois-ci, on vous fait une spéciale Lennon! La référence est, là encore, évidente ('Are you a mod or a rocker ? I'm a mocker !') ! Bon, promis, on arrête les frais avec les Beatles...

LE MUFFE - You Fly Away / Bif !! Sp - PIGMÉ Records / AREA PIRATA Records X
The spotlight on Pigmé Records is a good occasion to talk about one of the label's latest releases : the 2-title single by the abnormal garage-rockers from le Muffe, released in collaboration with Area Pirata Records (a Pisa-based structure that has been active in the Italian garage-punk scene for more than twenty years, with Killer Klown, Sick Rose, Plutonium Baby and many others nice bands in its catalogue).
The two tracks by the band from Bergamo (Lombardy) are rather atypical in their genre. If the raspy, crawling sound reminds us of certain tracks by the Monks, if the singer's regular hi-tone screamings evoke those of the Sonics, or if the Farfisa organ lines shamelessly leer towards the Fuzztones, the three members of le Muffe also seem excited to trample on the codes in use in the small world of the garage music: no guitar, no fuzz, a singer who adopts the nihilistic self-deprecation and the raw bluesy/punk-77 intonations of Andrea Mingardi (Supereircus) or Gérard Pisani (Bulldozer), a stunning finale on both tracks - fat street punk/Oi on You Fly Away with its huge Cockney Rejects-style backing vocals, and hardcore madness a la Negazione on Bif !!. By the way, these two tracks have a much rawer, rougher, lo-fi feel compared to the recordings of le Muffe's previous opus, the Lp Down, Down, Down (released by Area Pirata and Pigmé Records, again, back in 2022). Last but not least, the delightful exoticism of the Italian vocals pushes us to check back again all those 60's glories of the peninsula (I Raggazi Dai Capelli Verdi, the Ranger Sound, I Fantom's, I Tipi...) or the frenzied garage-punk of our friend Mr Occhio. Le Muffe è un'ottima musica!
On profite du coup de projecteur sur Pigmé Records pour glisser quelques mots sur une des dernières productions du label valentinois : le 45 tours 2-titres des garageux rocambolesques du Muffe, sorti en collaboration avec le label de Pise, Area Pirata Records (structure active depuis plus de vingt ans dans le domaine du garage-punk italien, avec à son catalogue, entre autres, Killer Klown, Sick Rose, Plutonium Baby...).
Les deux morceaux du groupe de Bergame (Lombardie) sont plutôt atypiques dans leur genre. Si le son râpeux et rampant nous rappelle certains titres des Monks, si les hurlements réguliers du chanteur évoquent ceux des Sonics, ou si les lignes d'orgue Farfisa lorgnent éhontément vers les Fuzztones, le Muffe se fait aussi une joie de piétiner les codes en usage dans le petit monde du garage : pas de guitare, pas de fuzz, un chanteur qui s'approprie l'auto-dérision nihiliste et les intonations rocailleuses bluesy/punk-77 d'un Andrea Mingardi (Supereircus) ou d'un Gérard Pisani (Bulldozer), et un final renversant sur les deux morceaux - punk-Oi grassouillet au programme pour You Fly Away et ses énormes choeurs à la Cockney Rejects, et folie hardcore en mode Negazione pour Bif !. On notera au passage l'aspect beaucoup plus brut, rugueux et lo-fi de ces deux morceaux par rapport aux enregistrements du précédent opus du Muffe, le Lp Down, Down, Down (Area Pirata et Pigmé Records déjà, en 2022). Enfin, l'exotisme du chant en italien nous pousse avec un plaisir non dissimulé à la ré-écoute des gloires 60's de la péninsule (I Raggazi Dai Capelli Verdi, the Ranger Sound, I Fantom’s, I Tipi...) ou du garage-punk endiablé de l'ami Mr Occhio. È un'ottima musica !
GOB PSYCHIC - How Can Anyone Be So Lucky ? Lp - LE CÈPE / BEAST RECORDS - 2023 X
It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see the band Gob Psychic get scheduled for an Australian tour, with the re-release of its How Can Anyone Be So Lucky? debut-album on Legless Records, the terrific label from Melbourne. The musical similarities between the Danish band and Stiff Richards x, Split System x or Stepmother x are staggering: a raw, belching voice, coming straight from the depths of the gut, a whole bunch of heavy-psych, death-punk and noisy-grunge soundings, some caustic lyrics, a huge wall of abrasive guitars and a fat, twirling bass, and last but not least, a lead guitar and a discreet synth that both wink at the whole post-Eddy Current Suppression Ring x Aussie post-punk surge (Respect For Authorities is such a hit!).
The six tracks are majestic, and the discovery of this mini-Lp was due to the fine collaboration between Le Cèpe Records (responsible for a few nuggets such as Howlin' Jaws x, We Hate You Please Die x, Deedee & the Abracadabras x - and all the young French garage/psyche sprouts - Dye Crap, Clavicule, You Say Strange...) and the tireless French label dedicated to international garage-punk, and key partner of the Binic Folks Blues Festival, Beast Records (Chris Pal x, Johnny Casino x, the Cherry Pies x... to name just a few).
Froogieland, our beautiful country, seems to finally open its doors over to international rock'n'roll. Gob Psychic will remain the hard/garage-punk revelation of 2023 around here and the rave reviews are pouring in. The combo is scheduled to headline the Born Bad festival organised to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Parisian boutique at les Mains d'Oeuvres next April.
Il n'y aurait rien d'étonnant à ce que Gob Psychic soit bientôt programmé sur une tournée australienne, avec à la clé la ré-édition de son Lp How Can Anyone Be So Lucky? par les melbourniens de Legless Records. Le rapprochement musical entre le groupe danois et les Stiff Richards x, Split System x et autres Stepmother x est en effet confondant : une voix d'écorché vif, éructée du plus profond des tripes, habillant tout un tas de sonorités heavy-psych, death-punk et noisy-grunge, des paroles caustiques, un gros mur de guitares abrasives, une basse grassouillette et virevoltante, un tempo varié et millimétré, et enfin, une lead-guitare et un synthé discret faisant de l'oeil à toute la déferlante post-punk australienne post-Eddy Current Suppression Ring x (quel tube quand même, ce Respect For Authorities !)

Notre beau pays semble enfin s'offrir intégralement à l'Internationale rock'n'roll. Gob Psychic y restera la révélation hard/garage-punk de l'année 2023. Les éloges dithyrambiques pleuvent. Le combo est d'ailleurs programmé en tête d'affiche du festival Born Bad organisé pour les 25 ans de la boutique parisienne à Mains d'Oeuvres en avril prochain.
EEL MEN - Archetype Sp - NO FRONT TEETH Records - 2023 X
English punkers are the only one that can come up with such hot tunes! London's Eel Men seem to have fully digested more than 50 years of pop-punk culture, and regurgitate here a fine mishmash of Bristish beat, Saxon power-pop, London mod-revival, English 79-post-punk, 90s' Brit-pop and garage-punk from the noughties. The Eel Men picked up as much from the Troggs, the Boys and the Merton Parkas as from early-Echo & the Bunnymen, Supergrass and Black Time.
Archetype and West Green Pirate are two exhilarating, catchy tracks, and you find yourself lining up a few dance steps without realising it. The boys have the smart looks of millennials punk - classy, teasing, and hedonist. The single was released, like its 2021 predecessor (Are You There God? It's Me) on No Front Teeth Records, the London-based DIY label that keeps on digging the real nuggets of our contemporary punk world (KGB x, Atomic Eaters x, Pogy & les Kéfars x, Bart & the Brats...). We simply love that kind of shit!
Il n'y a bien que des anglais pour nous pondre pareils brûlots ! Les londoniens d'Eel Men semblent avoir bien digéré plus de 50 années de culture pop-punk et régurgitent une jolie mélasse de bristish beat, de power-pop britannique, de mod-revival, de post-punk 79, de brit-pop 90's et de garage-punk début de siècle. Dans les Eel Men, on retrouve autant du Troggs, du Boys et du Merton Parkas, que du early-Echo & the Bunnymen, du Supergrass et du Black Time.
Archetype et West Green Pirate sont donc deux titres jouissifs, entrainants, et on se prend à aligner quelques pas de danse, comme ça, sans s'en rendre compte. Les boys ont la jolie dégaine des punks milléniaux - classouilles, taquins et je-m'en-foutistes. Le 45 tours est sorti, comme son prédécesseur de 2021 (Are You There God ? It's Me) sur No Front Teeth Records, le label londonien DIY qui continue à nous dénicher de véritables perles du punk contemporain (KGB x, Atomic Eaters x, Pogy & les Kéfars x, Bart & the Brats...). On adore, tout simplement !
