70s' sunglasses perched beneath his long curly hair, nonchalant posture of a guitar hero planted in his heeled boots, dressed in an elegant immaculate white outfit, performing a split in front of a golden, glittery curtain, under a shower of shiny snow... Isn't 'Automatic Alex' doing a bit too much ? At least, being slanderous allows us to see where we're stepping. Because like his French cousins from les Lullies or Flathead x, the Texans TV's Daniel x, the New Yorkers Brower x, and the Italians ZAC x, Slander Tongue has perfectly integrated, both visually and musically, the codes of the contemporaneous rock‘n’roll.
'Automatic Alex''s adventures with the Modern Pets and the Bikes in the 2010s left some garage-punk traces on P.Trash and Alien Snatch! Rec.. It was then logical that the Berliner would eventually take on the costumes of power pop and glam rock. The two cuts of this band's fourth 7'', released at the end of 2024, follow on the gems of the first two LPs (a self-titled debut album on Slovenly Recordings in 2020, and the second, Monochrome, on Alien Snatch! in 2023). With a new rhythm section, the band is once again ready for the most exciting adventures.
Lunettes de soleil 70's vissées sous ses longs cheveux bouclés, posture nonchalante de guitare-héro planté dans ses bottines à talonnette, sapé d'un élégant ensemble blanc immaculé, performant un grand écart devant des rideaux dorés et pailletés, sous une pluie de neige glitter... 'Automatic Alex', n'en ferait-il pas un petit peu trop ? Faire sa langue de pute (slander tongue) permet au moins de voir où on met les pieds. Car à l'instar de ses cousins frenchy des Lullies et Flathead x, des texans de TV's Daniel x, des new-yorkais de Brower x ou des italiens de ZAC x, Slander Tongue a parfaitement intégré, aussi bien visuellement que musicalement, les codes du filon du rock'n'roll 2.2.
Les aventures d''Automatic Alex' au sein des Modern Pets et des Bikes au cours des années 2010 avaient laissé quelques traces garage-punk du côté de P.Trash et déjà, d'Alien Snatch! Rec.. Il était finalement assez logique que le berlinois endossât pour la suite les costumes de la power-pop et du glam-rock. Les deux tubes de ce quatrième 45 tours, sorti fin 2024, succèdent aux pépites des deux premiers Lps (un premier album éponyme sur Slovenly Recordings en 2020, et le second, Monochrome, sur Alien Snatch! en 2023). La section rythmique venant d'être renouvelée, le groupe est de nouveau prêt pour la plus excitante des aventures.

Aus ? Static Age Musik? Who needs a refresh ? So let's get back to a long, long time ago !
That story started at the turn of the 2010's. I'd barely recovered from the shock of Eddy Current Suppression Ring when Total Control and UV Race burst onto the Aussie scene. Talks about Upset ! the Rhythm, Iron Lung Rec., and soon AntiFade were at stake, and we could really feel this new post-punk revolution coming. It was going to be huge and marvelous, as powerful as the American garage-punk wave that had emerged from the basements of Goner and Rip Off Rec. fifteen years earlier. But sadly, I missed the whole thing. For me, it was the time for a brutal plunge into the fifth dimension : young kids, lack of time, new work, moving to the tropics... I was no longer there, I was no longer me.
A lot can happen in seven years. An eternity in itself, long enough in any case to miss out entire chapters of rock history, that weren't easy to catch up afterwards. The Berlin post-punk scene hadn't waited for me, it was far too late for me to live it up, Diät had come and gone without me noticing it, I discovered Hyäne during one of its last show in Toulouse x, but at least, the world of Berlin's Static Age Musik was then opening up to me. Digging up the label was how I discovered the female quartet Aus. In its tortured, pre-apocalyptic cold-punk soundings, in its haunting, sinister dark waves, deeply rooted in the 80s sound of Einstürzende Neubauten or die Tödliche Doris, I loved that underneath crazy desire to reconnect with the nihilistic, epic story of the Risiko Club... Awesome ! Two Aus' albums were released in quick succession on Static Age Musik in 2018 and 2020. But the Berlin post-punk wave already seemed to be running out of steam, and a malicious virus put an end to it for good. The musicians were soon going their separate ways. Aus? Raus!
Fertig? Not so sure... Singer Lisa tried her hand at die Letzten Ecken for a while and launched her cassette label Billo Tonträger Rec., while bassist Anne-Sophie joined Liiek and co-founded Mangel Rec. x. The two labels have quickly become the new breeding ground for Berlin's DIY musicians. A new post-punk cycle now seems to be underway. And to our great delight, the young women are taking the opportunity to relaunch Aus and come together around these three daring cuts.
Aus ? Static Age Musik ? On s'offre une séance de rattrapage ? Flashback !
Tournant des années 2010. Je viens à peine de me remettre de la claque Eddy Current que déjà Total Control et UV Race s'engouffrent dans la brèche, on commence à parler d'Iron Lung Rec., et bientôt d'AntiFade. On la sent vraiment arriver, cette révolution post-punk, le truc va être énorme, aussi puissant que la vague garage-punk américaine sortie des entrailles de Goner et Rip Off Rec. quinze années plus tôt. Bon, au final, pour moi, c'est plutôt la plongée brutale dans la cinquième dimension - les mômes en bas âge, le manque de temps, le départ pour les tropiques : travail, famille... parti, oui, dans tous les sens du terme. Je surnage, je décroche, je ne sais plus, je ne suis plus.
Il s'en passe des choses en sept ans. Une éternité en soi, assez longue en tout cas pour passer à côté de pans entiers de l'histoire du rock. Pas facile de raccrocher les wagons. La scène post-punk berlinoise ne m'a pas attendue, c'est trop tard pour moi. Diät est passé et m'est inconnu, je découvre le chant du cygne d'Hyäne par hasard lors d'une virée toulousaine x. Mais au moins, l'univers des berlinois de Static Age Musik s'ouvre à moi, le quatuor féminin Aus en tête. Dans ses sonorités post-punk torturées et pré-apocalyptiques, ses dark-waves lancinantes et sinistres, très ancrées dans les années 80 du Einstürzende Neubauten ou die Tödliche Doris, traînent une folle envie de renouer avec l'épopée nihiliste du Risiko Club... Deux albums d'Aus sortent coup sur coup sur Static Age Rec., en 2018 et 2020, mais la déferlante post-punk berlinoise semble déjà s'essouffler, et un virus malin la liquide définitivement. Aus ? Raus ! Les musiciennes partent bientôt chacune de leur côté.
Terminé ? Pas tout à fait... Lisa s'essaie un temps avec die Letzten Ecken, et lance son label K7 Billo Tonträger Rec., la bassiste Anne-Sophie rejoint Liiek et co-fonde Mangel Rec. x. Les deux labels deviennent rapidement la nouvelle pouponnière des artistes DIY berlinois. Un nouveau cycle post-punk semble désormais s'engager. Et pour notre plus grand plaisir, les jeunes femmes en profitent pour relancer Aus et se réunir autour de ces trois titres audacieux.
TELESATAN - S/t Ep - PHANTOM Records - 2025 X
Talking about Mangel Rec.... In the midst of the summer, with the episode DIY, une Forme de Résistance, Arte TV's cultural program Tracks offered an unexpected dive into the German punk underground of the Berlin-Leipzig-Halle axis and handed the microphone to a few beautiful riptides : the post-punkers of Mangel Rec., the freaks of web TV Hitness.club, the activists from the low-budget printing workshop at the Riso Club, and the cassette duplicators at Tapes Shell. The whole thing was driven by a soundtrack featuring die Verlierer x, das Kinn and Pisse x... I burped my Weizenbier out with pleasure!
Those who are curious can also dig deeper into the subject by noting the omnipresence of the Berlin/Leipzig DIY networking through, for instance, the various projects of Telesatan singer Franny Fränzen: Flennen Rec. for her feminine, classy post-punk band Hot Chicks (Legalize It, co-released by Nantes-based Urticaria Rec., 2022), Turbo Discos x for the cassette album Hot Sauce by her arty/egg-punk project Sharizza, Phantom Rec. for the vocals on Jammertal by Pisse, and of course, on this first Ep by Telesatan (following the split Lp with the hardcore band Dispo in 2021 and a demo the following year).
Telesatan's BottleKiss video sets the scene right away, and the Leipzig quartet makes a big splash with these four cuts mixing moronic slacker-punk with mullet haircuts (à la the Chats x, Tony Dork x...) and death-punk in the vein of a few well-known Aussie mop-heads (Amyl & the Sniffers, COFFIN x, Hoon...). It's really well done and enjoyable!
À propos de Mangel Records... Avec l'épisode DIY, une Forme de Résistance, Tracks, l'émission culturelle d'Arte TV, proposait au cœur de l'été une plongée inattendue dans l'underground punk allemand de l'axe Berlin-Leipzig-Halle, et tendait le micro aux post-punkers de Mangel Records, aux freaks de la web-tv Hitness.club, aux activistes de l'atelier d'impression low-budget du Riso Club et aux duplicateurs de cassettes de Tapes Shell, le tout sur une bande-son mêlant die Verlierer x, das Kinn ou Pisse x... J'en ai roté ma Weizenbier de plaisir !
Les curieux pourront encore creuser le sujet en notant l'omniprésence du réseautage DIY berlino/lipsien à travers, par exemple, les divers projets de la chanteuse de Telesatan, Franny Fränzen : Flennen Records x pour le post-punk féminisé et classieux de ses Hot Chicks (Legalize It, coproduit avec les nantais d'Urticaria Records, 2022), Turbo Discos x pour l'album K7 Hot Sauce de son projet arty/post/egg-punk Sharizza, Phantom Records pour le chant sur Jammertal de Pisse ou donc, sur ce premier Ep de Telesatan (après le split-Lp avec les hardcoreux de Dispo de 2021 et une démo l'année suivante).
Le clip BottleKiss de Telesatan pose d'emblée le cadre et le quatuor de Leipzig tape un grand coup avec ces quatre titres mélangeant garage-punk crétinoïde, tendance slacker-punk et coupe mulet (the Chats x, Tony Dork x...) et death-punk à boire lignée déglingos australiens (Amyl & the Sniffers, COFFIN x, Hoon...). C'est très bien vu, et plutôt jouissif !
BREZEL UND ANTON - Spielen Mingus Pisse Sp - PHANTOM Records - 2024 X
Where, once again, we can see the influence of the Lipsians Pisse x, who make us realize that the influence of a punk band can also be measured by the tribute and recognition paid to it by the movement's elders, who go out of their way to cover one of its songs...
We all know Stereo Total, the French-German indie/arty-pop duo active from 1993 to 2021, whose two iconic representatives were Françoise Cactus (RIP) and Friedrich Ziegler. However, we know a little less about the punk career of that German guy with the surrealist-sarcastic nickname 'Brezel Göring': his hip-noise/post-punk beginnings with Sigmund Freud Experience and noise-psyche with Haunted Henschel in the late 1980s, the electro-punk of Echokrank in the early 2000s, his DIY activism with the label Verboten In Deutschland, which accompanied part of the German punk underground of the 2010s... And we can't miss his brand new band, formed with German actress Lilith Stangenberg, Brezel Göring & Psychoanalyse, which kicked off with a bang in 2024 with an exceptional post-punk double single (Tschernobyl and Sexuell Aufgeladen, self-produced), closely followed by a debut album with very Hazlewood-ian overtones, Friedhof Der Moral.
It is in this latter format that 'Brezel Göring' revisits Fahrradsattel from Pisse's Ep Kohlrübenwinter (Phantom/Beau Travail Rec., 2016), transforming an initially raw, convulsive synth-punk track into a vibrant synth-rockab firecracker that finally veers into-style electro-jazz/trip-hop ala Gorillaz worthy of the best Berlin parties organized by Berliner Hazelwood Rec. at the turn of the century.
Marlboromann awaits us next on the 'Anton' side. Originally, this composition from the Pisse's album Mit Schinken Durch Die Menopause (Phantom/ Beau Travail Rec., 2015) was also a fairly edgy track. Anton Garber, a longtime companion of Pisse x since their early days and a touring partner with the German hardcore band Mommy Boys (see below), has managed to transform it into a nice psychedelic, progressive, and trippy ode. Unrecognizable!

C'est sous ce dernier format que 'Brezel Göring' reprend le Fahrradsattel du Ep Kohlrübenwinter de Pisse (Phantom/Beau Travail Rec., 2016), et transforme un morceau synth-punk initialement brut et convulsif en un vibrant brûlot synth-rockab virant en trip électro-jazz/trip-hop à la Gorillaz et digne des meilleures soirées berlinoises d'Hazelwood Records du tournant du siècle.
Sur la face 'Anton' nous attend ensuite Marlboromann. À la base, cette composition de Pisse issu de l'album Mit Schinken Durch Die Menopause (Phantom/Beau Travail Rec., 2015) était aussi un morceau passablement énervé. Anton Garber, compagnon de route et de tournée des débuts de Pisse x avec les harcoreux teutons de Mommy Boys (voir ci-dessous), réussit ici à le métamorphoser en une ode psychédélique, progressive et planante. Méconnaissable !
MOMMY BOYS - H Ende Ep - SAALEPOWER 2 Records - 2024 X
So here's the best opportunity to rediscover the 11 tracks on this Ep by Anton Garber and his Mommy Boys... Released just a year ago, it had fallen into oblivion in the corner of my living room, under a pile of 45s waiting to be listened to again before being filed away. An 11-track Ep? That's hardcore, of course! But the old school one, without any frills, nor metal plans, and with a strong Deuschtpunk option à la Rock-O-Rama (Chaos Z, OHL...). The band plays very fast, has multi-singers mixing melodic vocals, hoarse voices and hooligan-like choirs, often spills over into a rather crude Teutonic Oi style or chaotic punk for/by German beer drinkers, and even offers a few minimalist post-punk riffs.
The Mommy Boys were active in the mid-2010s and accompanied 'Brezel Göring''s label Verboten In Deutschland alongside with Pisse x - which explains Anton Garber's presence on the single Brezel Und Anton (see above). Two split Eps were released at the time (the band's name is not unfamiliar to us; did we come across them in a review in the fanzine CRKO?). After a long hiatus, the Berlin band still seems to have something to say. This Ep was released on Saalepower2 Rec., a label linked to Turbo Discos x in Halle (Laff Box, Ex-White, Lassie...), some exciting activists of the 2.2 German DIY punk.
Voilà donc une belle occasion de redécouvrir les 11 titres de ce Ep d'Anton Garber et de ses Mommy Boys... Sortis il y a tout juste un an, il tombait dans l'oubli dans son coin du salon, sous une pile de 45 tours à ré-écouter avant classement. Un Ep de 11 titres ? Du hardcore, bien sûr ! Mais façon vieille école, sans fioriture et sans plan metal, et avec option Deuschtpunk à la Rock-O-Rama (Chaos Z, OHL...). Ça joue très vite, le chant multi-canal mélange vocaux vaguement mélodiques, voix rauque et beuglements hooliganesques, l'ensemble déborde souvent vers une Oi teutonne fort peu délicate, sur du punk chaotique de/pour buveurs de bières germains et offre même quelques plans post-punk minimaliste.
Les Mommy Boys, actif au milieu des années 2010, ont accompagné l'épopée du label de 'Brezel Göring' Verboten In Deutschland aux côtés de Pisse x - ceci explique la présence d'Anton Garber sur le 45 tours Brezel Und Anton (voir ci-dessus). Deux split-Eps sont sortis à l'époque (le nom du groupe ne nous est pas inconnu, les aurait-on croisé dans une chronique de l'excellent fanzine CRKO?). Après une longue pause, le groupe berlinois semble avoir encore des choses à raconter. Ce Ep est sorti sur Saalepower2 Records, label lié à Turbo Discos x de Halle (Laff Box, Ex-White, Lassie...), activistes passionnés et passionnants du DIY allemand 2.2.
