This austral winter selection takes us on a exclusively European musical journey. After digging down the Berlin-Leipzig underground scenes x, the exploration keeps on going in Amsterdam, with two bands playing slacker punk (Fuck Fuck Fuck) and garage punk (the Covids). We'll make a mandatory stop in Madrid for a big load of 77-punk with Automatic Lovers, then in Gent to discover a Belgian psyche/flower punk, Alpha Whale, in Zagreb for a hardcore dive into the DIY squats of Indikator B, and in the suburbs of Helsinki, infected by Tiikeri's melodic pop-punk. We won't overlook the Parisian dark waves of Mango Vulcin, nor the craziest British rhythm'n'blues of the Capellas. Yeah, long live European punk !
La sélection de l'hiver austral nous emmène pour un voyage musical exclusif à travers l'Europe. This European tour starts right now in Amsterdam with a nice selection of 7inches recently released by Wap Shoo Wap Records, the label that's on the rise, already met around here with the heavy-punkers Killer Kin x and the 60s revival band the Mocks x. An strong invitation to settle down for a few days on the shores of the Ijmeer sea.
On commence cette tournée européenne du côté d'Amsterdam pour passer en revue une jolie brochette de 45tours sortis dernièrement chez Wap Shoo Wap Records, le label qui monte, qui monte, déjà croisé par ici avec les heavy-punkers de Killer Kin x et le revival 60's de the Mocks x. Un appel à poser ses valises quelques jours au bords de l'Ijmeer.
A good laughter is guaranteed with the four young Amsterdammers from Fuck Fuck Fuck. Their devastating sense of humor and self-deprecation shine through their three heroic music video clips, three cinematic performances that reach new heights of absurdity: ridiculous choreography made by the four anti-heroes for Z+ series riding some Peugeot103 moped and charging a giant anus, video memories of chaotic concerts, a zany road movie for losers in need of a 38-tons drive...
Musically, Fuck Fuck Fuck is as much at home in the moronic slacker punk of Tony Dork x (Eennul/Anal and Bad Habits in 2022) as it is in the ramshackle proto-punk of the New York Dolls (Jaren Mee) or the Belgian kbd lineage of the Kids (Amsterdam Moord). The Dutch vocals add an extra folkloric touch. We're all giving up Fuck Fuck Fuck the middle finger.

THE COVIDS - Banned From The USA Sp - WAP SHOO WAP Records - 2024 X
The interest for the Covids doesn't really lay in the choice of a name, that seems to be symptomatic of a disenchanted era as well as an outdated punk tradition (thus, in the past, certain bands used to choose names such as SIDA, Herpès, Kolera, la Peste, Virus, etc). But the first idea that jumps to the listeners of this quartet is that youth once again goes hand in hand with authenticity, and that the vitality of the Amsterdam's new garage-punk scene is now well established.
While their promising 2022 single Certified (To Do) and their closely following debut album Bust To Bits drew their inspirations from bands such as the Briefs, Gee Strings, and the Stitches, the Covids now seem to be digging deeper into the garage-punk legacy of Rip Off Records. With that thrilling single Banned From the USA, the amphetamine-fueled Chuck Berry's guitar riff remains utterly addictive. The B-side features an alternate version of the track recorded with Spanish garage-trash one-man-band Nestter Donuts during their USA aborted tour, a misadventure that gave this single its name.
L'intérêt pour the Covids ne réside pas dans le choix de leur nom, certes symptomatique d'une époque désenchantée, mais aussi d'une tradition punk un brin poussive (en d'autres temps, certains groupes se choisirent eux aussi pour nom SIDA, Herpès, Kolerat, la Peste, Virus...). On retiendra donc surtout de ce quatuor que la jeunesse se conjugue une fois de plus avec l'authenticité, et que la vitalité de la nouvelle scène garage-punk d'Amsterdam n'est plus à démontrer.
Tandis que leur prometteur Certified (To Do) de 2022, suivi de près par un premier album, Bust To Bits, lorgnait du côté des Briefs, Gee Strings et autres Stitches, the Covids semble désormais creuser, avec ce Banned From the USA, l'héritage garage-punk de l'écurie Rip Off Records. Le riff de guitare à la Chuck Berry sous amphétamines reste totalement addictif. La face B permet de découvrir une version alternative du morceau enregistrée en compagnie du garage-trasheux espagnol Nestter Donuts lors de leur mésaventure nord-américaine qui donna son nom à ce titre.

This Boston Brats cut by Automatic Lovers is a distillation of pure rock'n'roll aggression, a testicular discharge of punk rage, a purulent spit of kbd fury. An absolute killer gem !
With this first single (plus a cover of the obscure Kirk & the Jerks on the B-side), the four Madrid natives with a circa-77 bad-boy look - the allusion to the legendary Vibrators is obvious - are making a smashing debut on the European punk scene, with a raw and unique revival sound (rough, edgy vocals, powerful backing vocals, effective guitar riffs and bass lines, punchy solos, killer drum bridges...). This explosive start, initiated by two major European labels - Madrid's Folc Records (Loose Lips x, les Lullies x, thee Cha Cha Chas x...) and Amsterdam's Wap Shoo Wap Records - is set to be continued during the 2025 fall with an album and a European tour. Love, love, love for these four compulsive punkers!

Avec ce premier single (+ une reprise des obscurs Kirk & the Jerks en face B), les quatre madrilènes au look de mauvais garçons circa 1977 - le clin d'oeil aux mythiques Vibrators est évident - font une entrée fracassante sur la scène punk européenne, avec un son brut et revival unique (chant rocailleux et sur le fil, choeurs puissants, riff de guitare et lignes de basse efficientes, solo coup-de-poing, pont à la batterie terrible...). ALPHA WHALE - All Hat, No Cattle Ep - BELLY BUTTON Records - 2025 X
For ten years, Belly Button Records has been a strong support of the punk rock and garage scene of the 'Flat Country' (Belgium), and released some of the most enjoyable records of the era (Ero Guro, Frankie Traandruppel x, Warm Exit x, Purrses x, Plexi Stadt x...). To celebrate this decade of discoveries, the Antwerp-based label is announcing a series of ten Eps. It has to be said : we won't miss that event and will follow every release very, very closely.
The Gent-based band Alpha Whale kicks off this Belly Button Records Hits series with its psychedelic/progressive rock, mixed with garage pop, country, and surf music. It brings to mind the sound of the Summer of Love, the various periods of the great Lee (Hazlewood), but also the current wave of the Australian/NZ psychedelic revival (SunFruits, Bananagum, Joe Ghatt...). When The Dawn Comes is a hit with a welcome serenity in these times of pre-apocalyptic stress.
This Ep also gives us the opportunity to (re)discover a band that flourished during the flower-punk revival of the previous decade and has sometimes been compared to the spaghetti-garage of the Movie Star Junkies. Their impeccably produced music videos - Strange Things, Dine With Satan, Sun God, and Face It - remain the best way to immerse oneself in their 2015 eponymous album released on 62TV Records and... Belly Button Records (for the cassette compilation version).
Direction la Belgique. INDIKATOR B - S/t Ep - DOOMTOWN Records - 2024 X
And now, a change of destination and atmosphere with a brief dive into the squats of Central Europe and the Balkans. In Zagreb, the DIY punk scene is booming, and Doomtown Records is playing no small part in that. The Croatian label - which we've already encountered here with the Ep by American band Poison Ruïn x - is throwing its full support behind a whole bunch of truly inventive and resourceful artists: Neon Lies (dark-wave), Koridor (gloom-punk), Mizerija and Bosonogo Djetiinjstvo (anarcho-punk), Senata Fox (screamo-hc), Parnepar (post-punk)... But also Indikator B, who also benefited from some good publicity with their first Iberian-French tour last spring.
Indikator B is a punk-hardcore trio that could have come straight out from a Rhapsody in Yugoslavia - an imaginary compilation with an old-school sound that borrows as much from anarcho-punk and Brit-hardcore as it does from Scandinavian crust and the Dischord stable. In any case, it is completely rooted in the early-80s hardcore sound : the tempo is lively and without double-pedal drumming, the 80's high-pitched roar of the guitar is far from the metal-drenched sounds of the following decade, the vocals are melodic, intelligible and without any strained screamings. The lyrics in Croatian, delivered in a beautiful booklet, evoke sleepless nights, melancholy, regret, and death (photo-translation thanks to AI). May we call that D(epression)-beat?
Changement de destination et de décors avec une courte plongée dans les squats d'Europe Centrale et des Balkans. À Zagreb, la scène punk DIY est en pleine effervescence, et Doomtown Records n'y est pas pour rien. Le label croate - déjà croisé par ici avec le Ep des américains de Poison Ruïn x - soutient en effet à bout de bras tout un petit monde franchement inventif et débrouillard :Neon Lies (dark waves), Koridor (gloom-punk), Mizerija et Bosonogo Djetiinjstvo (anarco-punk), Senata Fox (screamo hc), Parnepar (post-punk)... Indikator B est un trio punk-hardcore qu'on pourrait croire sorti d'une Rapsodie en Yougoslavie, une compilation imaginaire aux sonorités 'vieille-école' empruntant autant à l'anarco-punk et au brit-hardcore qu'au crust scandinave et à l'écurie Dischord, et quoi qu'il en soit, complètement ancrées dans le hardcore du début des années 80. Le tempo y est vivace et sans double-pédale, le vrombissement aigu de la guitare très 80's et loin des plans dégoulinant de metal de la décennie suivante, le chant mélodique, intelligible, sans hurlement poussif. Les paroles en croate, livrées dans un magnifique livret, évoquent les nuits d'insomnies, la mélancolie, les regrets, la mort (photo-traduction grâce à l'IA). Du D(epression)-beat ?
TIIKERI - Tee Se Itse Ep - TIIKERI Records - 2024 X
If we talk about Finnish punk, you may immediately think of the '82 hardcore band such as Kaaos, Rattus, Tampere SS, and a few other revolutionary and brutal pioneers of Scandinavian crust. However, this Scandi/Baltic country also experienced an early wave of punk that included its share of less abrasive but equally commendable gems. The compilation Bloodstains Across Finland (Briard, Eppu Normaali, Ratsia...) reminded us as early as 1996 of all these precursors from the late 1970s.
And that's where you'll find Tiikeri's pop-punk influences - all those particularly melodic tunes, those radiant punk anthems, with their majestic and folkloric Finnish vocals. The quartet from Turku, at the mouth of the Aura River in the south-west of the country, has been active for four years and has already released four Eps and one album, Punk Rock Pamaus (Open Up & Bleeding Records, 2023), as well as it has performed a Japanese tour, organized by the crusty punx of Vox Populi Records. The fact that the Japanese have so quickly taken a liking to Tiikeri should perhaps alert us.
Dès qu'on aborde le sujet du punk finlandais, on pense immédiatement aux hardcoreux '82 de Kaaos, Rattus, Tampere SS et autres inventeurs révolutionnaires et brutaux du crust scandinave. Pourtant, ce pays des bords de la Baltique connut lui aussi une première vague punk comportant son lot de pépites moins abruptes, mais tout aussi recommandables. La compilation Bloodstains Across Finland (Briard, Eppu Normaali, Ratsia...) nous rappelait dès 1996 au bon souvenir de tous ces précurseurs de la fin des années 70.
Et c'est bien par là qu'il faut chercher les influences pop-punk de Tiikeri, tous ces morceaux particulièrement mélodiques, ces ritournelles keuponnes radieuses, au chant finnois si majestueux et pittoresque. Le quatuor de Turku, à l'embouchure du fleuve Aura, au sud-ouest du pays, actif depuis quatre ans, a déjà sorti quatre Eps et un album, Punk Rock Pamaus (Open Up & Bleeding Records, 2023), agrémenté d'une tournée au Japon, organisée par les crusty-punx de Vox Populi Records. Que des japonais jettent aussi rapidement leur dévolu sur Tiikeri devrait peut-être nous alerter.
MANGO VULCIN - S/t Maxi-Ep - LES DISQUES MAUVAIS GARÇONS - 2025 X
The Parisian duo Mango Vulcin provides further proof that all roads lead to post-punk.
On synth #1 and vocals, Daick d'Herouville. He's coming from the Parisian skinhead scene of the last 20 years, has played guitar and drums for various influential Oi bands, from Lion's Law to Survet Skin, including the early days of Squelette. It's safe to assume that he's listened to all of Blitz's albums on repeat.
On synth #2, drum machine, and backing vocals is Florian Chambonnière. He was that young, slick-hair rocker hidden behind the drums of les Cavaliers, a surf band that opened for the Marked Men at l'Excalibur in the summer of 2006 - one of the best gigs we organized with the Reims' Stupid Jerks (that doesn't make anyone any younger). He kept on rocking with the garage-punk combo Fix It, before experiencing his first synth/post-punk thrills with Cité Lumière. For the anecdote, his longtime mate Alexis Molenat, who has been by his sidekick in all these projects, has this time gone off on his own to start his own electronic project, Alexis Lumière.
The stage is set down. Thus, armed like this, the two members of Mango Vulcinexplore most of the variations of the underground and deviant synthetic music: sinister and melancholic synth-punk (New Dawn), haunting and suicidal synth-pop (In the Middle), gothic electro-indus (Lone Wolf, Middle Age), particularly addictive cold-wave à la Cure(Padampam, as if Robert Smith had appropriatied the riff from LSD's St Sauveur), and dark-wave (Broken Mind).
With this seventh release, les Disques Mauvais Garçons - a label backed by the Parisian shop Born Bad and linked to the cold-wave big brothers' band Frustration x - further affirms its synth-punk/dark-wave orientation, following the releases of Tempomat x, Bound By Endogamy x, Dick Voodoo, or the thrilling compilation celebrating the shop's 25 years anniversary of the shop. A cold wind is blowing over Paris.
Tous les chemins mènent au post-punk et le duo parisien Mango Vulcin en apporte une nouvelle preuve.
Au synthé n°1 et au chant, Daick d'Herouville. Ainsi armés, les deux membres de Mango Vulcin explorent la plupart des variantes des musiques synthétiques souterraines et déviantes: synth-punk sinistre et mélancolique (New Dawn), synth-pop lancinante et suicidaire (In the Middle), électro-indus gothique (Lone Wolf, Middle Age), cold-wave Curiste particulièrement addictive (Padampam, un peu comme si Robert Smith s'appropriait le riff du St Sauveur de LSD), dark-wave enténébrée (Broken Mind).
Avec cette 7ième production, les Disques Mauvais Garçons, label adossé à la boutique parisienne Born Bad et lié aux grands frères coldeux de Frustration x, affirme toujours plus son orientation synth-punk/dark-wave, après les sorties de Tempomat x, Bound By Endogamy x, Dick Voodoo ou encore l'excellente compilation célébrant les 25ans d'activisme du magasin. Un vent glacial souffle sur Paname.
THE CAPELLAS - Love Prayer/ ZigZag Wanderer Sp - DISQUES ROGUE - 2025 X
We all remember the Jack Cades' first single, Run Paulie Run x, that blew us away back in 2018. Time has passed, and listening to their third album Something New (Dangerhouse Skylab/Beluga Music, 2023), we can appreciate the Jack Cades' evolution, both in terms of production and sound.
With the Capellas, a side project involving some of the Avon Valley crew (Elsa & Mike Whittaker and Mole Lambert), the band temporarily abandons its purely 60s mod, Medways garage and psychedelic Brit-pop to focus on a much more rhythm'n'blues and rock'n'soul sound, but still firmly rooted in the British beat: Yan Quellien's late-50s drumming (the Barrucudas/ Hawaii Men), Mole's groovy bass, Mike's bouncy bluesy riffs, Elsa's soulful vocals... Also noteworthy are the brass section and tambourine hooks on Love Prayer, or the well-chosen cover of Captain Beefheart's Zigzag Wanderer.
After a first Ep in 2023 (Take Your Chance With..., Sweet Grooves/ Wild Cave Records), the Capellas launched a major offensive in the spring of 2025 with this lively double single, released by the French champion of 60s garage rock, Toulouse-based Jean-Marc Varluche from les Disques Rogue, and a debut album, Untamed, on the German label Soundflat Records, the undisputed European leader in the genre. Groove, baby groove!
